Dogwood
(aka: Flowering Dogwood;
Eastern Flowering Dogwood)

Cornus florida

The member of the Dogwood family sports many tiny, 3/16 inch (0.5 cm) wide flowers in crowded flower heads surrounded by four, white, petal-like bracts. Each flower head (including the bract) measures 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) wide. The flowers themselves have four, yellowish-green petals, and appear on the tree before the leaves. The 2.5 to 5 inch (6 to 13 cm) long leaves are opposite, elliptical and have slightly wavy edges. Trees measure up to 30 feet (9 m) in height and up to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter. Flowers bloom in April and May.
