Common Sow Thistle


Sonchus oleraceus

This member of the Composite Family sports Dandelion like flowers measuring 1 inch (2.5 cm) across, made up of all ray flowers, atop a smooth, angled, 1 to 8 ft (.3 to 2.4 m) tall stem. This species of thistle has smooth bracts and stems and has sharp, pointed, lobed leaves that embrace the stem. Leaves can measure as much as 10 inches (25 cm ) long. Commonly found in waste places, fields and along roadsides. Flowers bloom from June to October.
