Chicory
Chicorium intybus
This member of the Sunflower family sports blue
flower heads with petals that are square-tipped and fringed. The 1.5 inch
(3.8 cm) wide flower heads, which typically close by noon on sunny days,
appear stalkless on a stiff, furrowed stem. The leaves are primarily basal
[3 to 6 inches (7.5-15 cm) long and dandelion-like] with the oblong to
lanceolate stem leaves being much smaller. The plant grows from 1 to 4
feet (30 to 120 cm) tall and grows in fields, roadsides and waste places.
Flowers bloom from June to October.
