Bluets
(aka: Quaker Ladies)
Houstonia caerulea
This tiny member of the
Bedstraw family is easily recognized by it's pale blue flowers with yellow
centers. Though the flower appears to have four petals, the flower is actually
tube-shaped with four flattened lobes. Each flower is 0.5 inches (1.3 cm)
wide and sits atop a thread-like stem. The leaves are oblong and occur
in tufts. The plant ranges from 3 to 6 inches ( 7.6 to 15.2 cm) in height
and often forms large colonies in soils that are primarily nutrient poor.
Flowers from April to June.
