Black-Eyed Susan
Rudbeckia hirta
This member of the Sunflower
family sports a solitary flower, on the top of each hairy stem, that consists
of a chocolate-colored central disk and 10 to 20 long, daisy-like rays.
Each flower measures 2 to 3-1/2 inches (5 to 8.9 cm) across.
The 2 to 7 inch (5 to 17.6
cm) long, lanceolate to ovate, hairy leaves have three prominent veins.
This resident of fields and roadsides reaches 1 to 2-1/2 feet (61 to 152
cm) and flowers during July and August. This biennial forms a rosette of
leaves during it's first year with flowers being produced the second year.
