Large-Flowered Bellwort

Uvularia grandiflora
This member of the Lily Family is quite healthy despite it's withered appearance. The leaves, which have short hairs on the underside, are immature at flowering and completely unfurl later. Each plant has an arched stem that appears to pierce the leaves and slender yellow flowers approximately 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) in length. Plants reach a height of 20 inches (50 cm). This plant is common in woodland areas throughout the state and flowers in April.
NOTE: There is a related species Uvularia perfoliata that closely resembles the Large-Flowered Bellwort but have flowers that are only 3/4 of an inch to 1.5 inches (1.5 cm to 4 cm) in length and lack the hair on the underside of the leaves.
