Asiatic Dayflower

Commelina communis

This member of the Spiderwort family sports a unique three petalled flower with the top two, larger petals, being blue and the lower, much smaller petal being white. The flowers are 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide and protrude from a heart shaped, enfolded leaf. The fleshy, oblong-lanceolate leaves are 3 to 5 inches (8-13 cm) long with pointed tips and rounded bases surrounding the reclining stem. Plants reach 1 to 3 feet (30-90 cm) in length and can be found along roadsides and wooded boarders, especially in moist ground. Flowers bloom from July to September with each flower blooming for a period of one day.
