The Me 329 project

Although it was never produced, nor even flown, the Messerschmitt Me 329 was a very interesting factory project. It was based both from the Lippisch P10 and the Me 410, and was configured as a two rear wing engine mid-wing cantilever plane with pulling propellers. The cockpit of the Me 329 was the only similar thing to the Me 410’s. Anyhow the basic design of the Me 329 can clearly be seen in the Me 163 Komet rocket interceptor, specially for what concerns the wings and vertical rudder. The undercarriage was a tricycle type with retractable nose double wheel.

On 15 March 1942, Messerschmitt issued a factory project description. It was estimated that even with a bomb load of 1000 kg, and being 360 kg heavier than the Me 410, the Me 329 could be 51 kmph faster by the means of its aerodynamical shape.

Armament was to consist of four MG 151 20 mm guns and two MK 103 30 mm cannons with a capability of 4 x 400 rpg or 2 x 600 rpg. The aeroplane was projected as a multi-purpose fighter/bomber and it was also considered the possibility of fitting prototypes with two- 88 mm cannons for the heavy destroyer rôle.

The project was filed on Summer of 1942 because it was too advanced and RLM would neveraprove it. Further development and capabilities were concentrated in the more conventional Me 410 project.
