| Chemotherapy is treatment with chemicals. Every patient's cancer is different, so there are many chemicals that can be used. Unfortunately, a relative few show established benefit. The chemicals are poisons. They can kill cells, and they can kill a patient. The doctor's choice is to select the chemical most poisonous to the patient's cancer cells, and kill these cells with the least harm to the rest of the patient's body.
