NEWSLETTERS Communication between members and between the association and its members is one of the vital ingredients in assuring the healthy continuance of an association.
A regular newsletter is one of the most important tools in ensuring this state of affairs, yet is often the most difficult to organize. Obtaining contributions from members is often like pulling teeth, yet members are disappointed if an issue is missed.
The editor must therefore be an accomplished writer or possess unbounding enthusiasm ......
The following professional newsletters were produced with early electronic equipment, such as a typewriter with a 2-line memory, manual typesetting of graphics (today they would be much less time-consuming on a computer!):
- "The Copier" was published for three years on a monthly basis as a teaching tool for the use of photocopying, duplicating and blueprinting/whiteprinting equipment. There were annual reports on the Hannover Fair in West Germany and the N.O.M.D.A. convention in the U.S., where new equipment was introduced, with high quality photographic coverage and details of trends and innovations. This was the only newsletter of its kind at that time.
- A quarterly newsletter was started for the Independent Retail Grocers Association. There was photographic coverage of store openings and annual events.
- An illustrated, informational magazine entitled the Green Emerald, covering alternative news, philosophy and spiritual matters was also published quarterly for three years. Many of the articles were contributed by the publisher.
