RUNE QUEST
THE WORLD OF ALISTARR

CASTES
1)Warriors 2)Healers 3)Merchants 4)Mages 5)Builders 6)Priests 7)Scribes/Scholars

These 7 castes are accepted on all of Allistar, though each culture has modified them slightly
to suite their ways. Those differences will be covered here. All Player Characters are considered
to be a Caste member, unless they choose not to be. This information is provided for general
player knowledge.

WARRIORS
In general, this caste is available to all who consider themselves fighters. There are requirements
to be accepted into this caste, mainly to show that a person requesting membership is capable of
fighting, not necessarily surviving that fight. In all cultures a member of the Warrior castes is
recognized by wearing either a belt or sash that is the color of blood red. Guild Masters are
recognized by gold bands diagonally across their belt or sash.
Certain cultures have made some modifications in who can be accepted and who cannot.

On Armath and Korados, to be accepted as a Warrior, the person must demonstrate skill in at least
one hand weapon, one missile weapon, and the use of a shield. No distinctions between types of
warriors are made, they are all the same in the eyes of the Caste.
(Guild membership is 1 Gold Dragon per month)

On Cyimallas and Farlanth, because these are lands where Nobility is the ruling class, they have
greatly modified the warrior caste. In these two lands, only a Knight or person of Higher Station
is considered a member of the Warrior Caste. There are sub-castes recognized here only. Squires,
Guards an Soldiers are members of the Sub-caste called Guardsmen. Archers and Crossbowmen are of
the Sub-Caste of Bowmen.
Also, women are forbidden to be members of the Warrior caste, they may be members of the sub-castes.
(Guild Membership for Warriors is 1 Gold Dragon per month, for sub-castes is 5 Silver Wyverns per
month.)
(Guardsmen are recognized by the red belt or sash with diagonal blue bands)
(Bowmen are recognized by the red belt or sash with diagonal green bands)

On Sava you must first serve two years to a lord before that Lord will be allowed to permit the
person to attempt guild membership. The Lord will only allow a person to go if they have
demonstrated enough skill to their lord that they feel the person is competent enough. Guild
membership is usually restricted to men, but some women have been known to be accepted.
(Note – Ninjas are not true members of the warrior caste, but rather a sub-caste of Assassins.)
(Guild membership is 1 Gold Dragon per month)

On Shontar, because the two cultures that make up this continent have been at war for a thousand
years, the requirements are extremely lax. One must simply go to a guild house, pay the fee and
you are a member of the guild. Everybody is accepted, they have even done away with age
requirements, so Shontar is known to have warriors as young as 12 years of age.

On Thorvas guild membership is very difficult. First the person must be of at least 17 years of
age, but they must have studied under a guild member for at least 5 years, so training starts at
12. When they go to request membership they must complete 5 trials over the course of 2 days.
Trial by Axe, Trial by Sword, Trial by Spear, Trial of the Bow and Trial of the Shield..
(Note for players. Viking characters must have reasonable skill in all of these categories if
they wish to be of the Warrior caste of Thorvas) Guild membership is open to both men and women.
(Guild membership if 1 Gold Dragon per month)

Kataurs & Dragons Atoll do not have their own Guild Halls, but they do recognize all castes
from everywhere else.

HEALERS
To be accepted as a member of the Healers guild is the same on all of Alistarr. The person may be
man or woman, must be at least 21 years of age. They must have studied under a Guild Master for at
least 5 years and must show proficiency in both non-magical and magical healing. A Guild member is
recognized by wearing a dark green belt or sash. Healers are generally non-combatants, and only
fight to defend themselves, it is considered a major crime on all of Alistarr to kill a Healer.
(Guild membership is 5 silver wyverns a month.) Guild Masters are recognized by the gold diagonal
bands across their belt or sash.

MERCHANTS
This is probably the most difficult caste to become a member of, as well as the most expensive.
First the merchant must have an established business that is recognized by the guild. (Nobody has
come up with a business yet that they don’t recognize). The merchant must have been running their
business for 5 years, and each year they must pay 10% of their monthly income to the guild. Once
they are accepted that fee drops to 5% of their monthly income. The guild conducts regular audits
of its members businesses to ensure fair pricing and good business practices.
(A guild member will always display their Guild Seal where it can be easily seen by their
customers. Many merchants are not guild members, because of the strict standards that are
required) Guild members are recognized by wearing a belt or sash of silver. Guild Masters are
recognized by the gold diagonal bands across the belt or sash.)

MAGES
This is the most difficult guild to become a member of. A person does not go to a Guild Hall
and request membership, but rather a Guild Master will at some point in the mages life find
them, and tell them that they have been chosen to become a guild member if they so choose. If
the mage accepts they are taken to Star Spire City where they are brought before the Council
of Mages. There the person simply asks, for they have already been accepted.
There are no membership dues, and they do not wear some distinguishing clothing. Mages simply
recognize other mages that are guild members. The only real requirement is that whenever a Mage
is in a town/city that has a Guild Hall, that they give a few magic points to the Halls Power
Storage device.

BUILDERS
This is a strange caste, for its members may be members of other castes and still be a member of
this one as well. This caste is defined by the terminology of Builder. A person who builds
furniture is not a Builder, but somebody that constructs buildings is. A person that makes
weapons is not a builder, but a person that makes siege engines is a builder. A person that
builds fences is not a Builder, but a bricklayer is a builder.
The person must have spent at least 3 years in their craft before going before the Builders
Guild to request membership.
(Guild membership is 1 copper wyrm a month) Builders are recognized by their Brown belts or
sashes and Guild Masters are recognized by the gold diagonal bands across their belts or sash.)

PRIESTS
Another caste that is defined by terminology. There are priests that represent a unnamed deity,
they are recognized by being bald and smelling of jasmine oils. (Even the women of this priesthood
are bald)
Some deities have priests that are not recognized by this caste. A Rune Priest of Humakt would not
be accepted by this guild. But a Rune Priest of Daka-Fal would be. (Priests are considered to be
non-violent. So a Rune Priest of Daka-Fal, who happens to be a Warrior, would not be recognized
by this guild)
(Guild members are recognized usually be wearing a device of their religion. Or by a white belt
or sash)
(There are no membership fees)

SCRIBES/SCHOLARS
By most people this is considered one of the easiest castes to get into. But to those who actually
try, it is extremely difficult. Membership is open to anybody over the age of 15. They must have
studied under a guild member for at least 3 years, so training can start as young as 12. When the
teacher decides that the student is ready, the student must first have decided if they will be a
scribe or a scholar.
A SCRIBE is one who maintains records, records important events, writes books, etc.
A SCHOLAR is one who teaches, such as Math, History, Science, etc.
When a Scribe goes before the Guild Council, they must orally present a paper they have written
on something of import. A detailed account of a battle, the minutes of a council meeting, recorder
for a court trial, etc.
When a Scholar goes before the Guild Council they must orally present a lecture on the topic of
their choice. A Math presentation, a History lesson, etc.
Scribes and Scholars wear no item that distinguishes them as such. Guild membership is one gold
dragon a month.
