In April 1971 a dozen staff members from MCP at Elizabeth Towers decided to form a dart league to be known as the MCP Dart League. We met one night a week at the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Officers Mess, Pleasantville.
In 1973 several staff members working with NLCS (Newfoundland and Labrador Computer Services), now xwave, asked about joining our dart league. The first thing we had to do was find a bigger place in which to play. We moved to the old UNF club on Pleasant Street. Our league became known as the MCP/NLCS Dart League. Some nights we would play upstairs and other nights we would be forced to play in the basement because of Eastern Division Darts. After four years we grew tired of this shifting around and decided to look for a better facility.
One of our members said that he was a member of the CEI Club and would check and see if we could play there. Arrangements were made for us to do so. In September 1977 we moved to the old CEI clubrooms on Church Hill. By this time some of our players did not work at MCP or NLCS so a name change was in order. The members decided as we were playing in the central part of town we should change our name to the Central Dart League, In 1979 the CEI Club moved to it's present location on Hamilton Avenue and our league moved with the club. We have been there ever since.
When our league first started we paid twenty five cents a night for dues. Over the years the dues have increased substantiallyand now instead of giving away trophies we mostly give cash prizes with most of our money used at the end of the year for a Dinner and Dance. At the Dinner and Dance in early May everyone in the league gets a prize in addition to cash prizes/trophies for the league playoff Champions, Most Improved etc. Member prizes are awarded by random draw with the member selecting his own prize from the remaining prize pool.
In April 2001 our league celebrated our 30th anniversary. Two of the founding members, Eric Hodder and Jon Carnell are still playing with the league.
Note: United Nail Foundry club on Pleasant Street is now a residence in the area of Peters Fabulous Foods takeout restaurant. The club was owned by the United Nail Foundry a business located at the foot of Hamilton Avenue within walking distance from the CEI Club today. The Foundry itself has been torn down and is today a open field.
