With the signing of QB Brian Griese and TE John Gilmore, loss of CB Jerry Azumah, CB Charles Tillman's woes and WLB Lance Briggs contract demand growing by the minute, I think this is the way the Bears will draft in 2006.
Possibilities: Red denotes unlikely, BOLD favorite or likely.
Round 1 - CB/S - Jason Allen - workout alone got him this high...With Mike Brown injuries late last season (and the season before) they look to gain some solid depth in the secondary. Mike Green is soon to be on the street, IMO, and they have to shore up the secondary pronto. CB Wesley signing was a minor deal...And Azumah retirement means this becomes the PRIMARY NEED.
Others of interest: WR Sinorice Moss, LB Ernie Sims, CB Antonio Cromartie & OG/OT Daryn Colledge (unlikely.)
Round 2 -Marcedes Lewis TE - if he's still around (Arizona, Carolina, Cincy have alot to say about this...) - they would be tickled to pick up this guy. Size and decent speed for a TE. Unfortunately, the Bears resigned John Gilmore. Which could mean going toward whatever was missed in Round 1.
Others: CB Richard Marshall, CB Kelly Jennings, OLB Spencer Havner
Round 3 - Brandon Johnson OLB - Speed alone should intrigue the Bears into this pick. He's not meaty enough yet, but with the defense liking very quick and agile players, I would think this guy meets their need.
Others: TE Anthony Fasano, TE Dominique Byrd, OG/OT Taitusi Lutui (RT or LG in college)
Round 4 -Paul McQuistan OT - Bears can't afford to let Grossman/Orton/ Brian Griese flavor get smoked too often. Fred Miller and John Tait are over 30....I would have preferred an earlier pick of O-lineman, but any help is good help at this point.
Others: TE Joe Klopfenstein, DE Mark Anderson, OLB/SS Jon Alston (all of which could be off the board by Round 3, IMO)
Round 5 - Garrett Mills H-back - Jason McKie, Gabe Reid & Bryan Johnson are in my opinion WORTHLESS. Mills has all the tools from combine workout and on-the-field performance to rate AT LEAST 5th round status. His times in 3cone, 20 and 60 yd shuttle were up there with Safeties and CBs. And better than 50% of the wideouts. And leading the nation at TE in yds and catches shows he can do something right.
Others: OG Mark Setterstrom, OLB James Anderson, CB Danieal Manning
Round 6 - DE Frostee Rucker from USC gives them some depth after Michael Haynes turned out to be a fraud.
Others: QB/WR Brad Smith, TE T.J. Williams, OG Adam Stenavich, LB Terna Nande,
CB/S Marcus Hudson
I could be wrong on every pick, but IF I was GM:
1) CB/S Jason Allen - Secondary problems averted...
2) OLB Spencer Havner pe- Adds depth to PRO-BOWL caliber LB core.
3)OG/RT Taitusi Lutui - versatile, size works, doesn't have to start day one, molding is the key....
4) OLB/SS Jon Alston - 4.4 speed - Safety is a calling. But LB isn't a problem. SLEEPER OF THE DRAFT???
5) TE Garrett Mills - TE/FB combo that could really put a different look out there for the Bears. My favorite pick...
6)DE Frostee Rucker - depth pick for D-line.
