From the news wire:
Sidney Ponson was released Thursday by the
Baltimore Orioles, who contend the pitcher's conduct and problems with alcohol the past nine months give them grounds to terminate his contract.
Ponson, on the 15-day disabled list with thumb and calf injuries, has one season left on a three-year deal that would pay him $10 million in 2006.
My opinion is that he might 'turn' it around. He has talent - mid 90's fastball with some command - and maybe could find work as a 4th or 5th starter. Or convert him to a closer. I doubt he'll receive his 10 million, unless the Player Union loses his appeal, but a team could sign him to a minor league contract for 2006. Or a 1-year deal for 3-4 million.
I wouldn't being saying this for many guys, but he has a drinking problem that has interfered with his pitching. With help, he could be that diamond in the rough. Maybe the Cubs should look at him... They gave up on Dennis Eckersley, who also was purported to have a drinking problem, but then he became the PREMIER closer of the late 1980's and early 1990's.
Sidney Ponson - get it together. Otherwise, all that talent will have went to waste.
