Three Way Deal:
White Sox get:
Danny Baez (backup closer to Hermanson)
Mike Lowell (3rd baseman that could hit 30 HRs at the Cell)
Florida average pitching prospect (later)
Tampa Bay gets:
AJ Burnett (#1 SP)
Brandon McCarthy (#3 SP)
(1B/ 2B/ C prospect –from either team )
Florida gets:
Damaso Marte (RP to help now)
Joe Crede (backup 3rd base - or trade to get RP)
Aubrey Huff (LF,RF, 3B, 1B none well - but a .290 lifetime hitter)
Florida needs Relief help, with 4 injured guys, and another bat. Marte has decent numbers – lifetime and this year also, and he’s a power lefty (93-94 MPH.) Huff gives them a so-so versatile (plays OF, 1B,3B) .290 lifetime hitter in a slight slump. Crede is another insurance at 3rd. (He’s hitting only .255 lifetime – and I know that sucks.) They could just flip Crede for another RP.
Tampa gets the top of the rotation stud that lives in Florida, I think. They’ll have to sign him for next year and beyond, but that’s the ONLY way they will ever compete with the Yanks or Boston. AJ Burnett, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy could be a very nice rotation…for the future. Spending the cash on Burnett, well, they gotta do something to make a run at .500 or better. McCarthy may not work out, but it is something Tampa needs…pitching.
Sox get the backup relief help they need in Danny Baez – being he has closed games effective enough for 3 years. They get 31 yr. old Mike Lowell (with proven power and some patience in taking walks) in a bandbox like the CELL, he’ll give them some playoff experience and not an overbearing contract, IMO. He is a sure fielder, so if he doesn’t tear up the ball right away, he’ll at least be no worse than Crede is on defense. This is the best I can think of for them. Plus a prospect to legitimize the deal in someone’s eyes.
It is difficult to give a team a great player, having a good year. So I think this can work, if someone can open their mind and eyes. Tampa gets 2 SPs for the future. Sox get BP help and a proven player in a off season. Florida doesn’t lose out completely, getting BP help and 2 3Bs (with a so-so OF and 1B backup.)
Probably more ignorant to all of you than the last one – but it has to be due to fickle fans, or contract issues I don’t see. But to me, the players work, well enough. No trade is perfect: that is the chance in making them.
Sox get the best NOW help.
Florida gets another proven hitter in Huff - that could work out well. Marte is competent in his job to help.
Tampa gets the BEST future, if they decide rightly to take a leap on AJ Burnett. Payroll aside, if you want to WIN you have to upgrade with a legit ace.
