The Children Of Today

It should be noted, that although this poem generalizes,
it is not meant to indicate that ALL teenagers fall into this
category. Today, as in many years before, there are a great many
responsible, reliable and trustworthy young people.
Unfortunately, this was written for the parents of all others.

I sit and look around me, at the Children of today;
And question where they headed - What they do along the way.

We had our groups called "hippies", and "flower children ",too;
But they didn`t seem to cause the hurt - Todays young people do.

I do not knock their code of dress, or strangely colored hair;
But I just can`t seem to fathom - Some of the weapons that they wear.

It used to be just gangs of boys, who seniors feared to pass;
But now young girls tote knifes and such - It just all seems so crass.

What happened to respect and love, for one own Mom and Dad;
And looking up to teachers, and policemen - They`re not bad.

The law`s have changed in recent years - The Young Offenders Act;
No longer can a parent rule, their kids do - That is a fact.

Folks cannot give a curfew, nor dare to raise a hand;
Whatever can these parents do - To try to take a stand.

They only want the very best, for their young boys and girls;
But somehow tears and anguish - Take the place of dreams and joys.

I do not worry too much......these children will get by;
It`s the parents I`m concerned about - Their only question`s "why".

For troubled parents everywhere, with daughter or with son.
Just keep in mind ( it is the truth) - You`re really number one.

For parents who are in need of help and understanding the problems
of their children, please do not give up. In every City or Town you can
find help for yourself and for your child, go to a Family Support Centre.
Everything said is confidential, they do have great resources
available free for everyone to use.
