"We'll be in your town when we get there." Bluestime, that is; a swingin', groovin', hip band that focuses on a jumpin' mix of Chicago style blues and classic jazz recorded with Count Basie's credo "Keep it simple, swinging, and sincere at all times." Formed in 1992, Bluestime was founded by original J.Geils Band members Magic Dick and Jay Geils.
After the J. Geils Band departed ways in 1985, Jay found himself with alot of time on his hands. He focused on his second love; race cars and sports cars. Magic Dick on the other hand took that opportunity to focus on his "Magic Harmonica", a co-invention with Pierre Beauregard. It features chords, and his main priority was to expand and develop this age-old instrument. After years of hiatus from the music business, Dick found himself at a 3 day comic strip fest in Holland in 1992. He was invited to play at a local club to front a bluesband. He dug the experience so much that when he arrived home, he called Jay and told him of his experience. Ironically, Jay at the time was out jammin' again with local musicians from Grouton,MA. Since the both have always had a fond love of Chicago style blues, and classic jazz, they decided to get together and jam again. Alas, Bluestime was formed. They picked up Steve Ramsey on drums, Jerry Miller on Guitar, and Roy McCloud on Bass. Later, Mccloud was replaced by Micheal Mudcat Ward who played with Bluestime for several years before departing for other interests. Ward was replaced by current bassist, John Turner.
They began jammin' out in 1993 and realized they have to record this. They indeed did just that using vintage equipment and a live studio setting. This recording produced Bluestime(Rounder 1994), which features 13 songs covering such influences on Dick and Jay such as Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. They are also Charlie Christian enthusiats, especially Jay. Other heroes they share an inspiration and enthusiasm for are Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. Bluestime also features the premier of Magic Dick on vocals. He chose to do this because of Little Walter's influence and Dick wanted to become an even better musician so he committed to vocals. "It's a matter of knowing your voice and realizing its breadth of expression" says Dick. Further he adds; "The best voice you can have is your own."
The band continues to play hard and tour hard from clubs right through large arenas as part of B.B. Kings' Bluesfest. In 1996, they released tbeir second cd; "Little Car Blues." Following the release of that cd, they continued to tour hard. In 1997, they once again toured as a feature act for B.B. King's Bluesfest.
In 1999, Magic Dick and Jay Geils found themselves reuniting for a summer tour with former bandmates Seth Justman, Danny Klein and Peter Wolf for The Great American Houseparty Tour. Immediately following the J. Geils Band reunion tour, Magic Dick and Jay Geils went back to Bluestime for B.B.King's Bluesfest at select cities.
