LIENDO
PLANTATION
RANCH |
|
Jose Liendo
received the original Spanish grant for this land, but
he sold
it in 1849. In the early 1870s, it was owned by Elizabeth
Ney, a
renowned German sculptress. She, her husband, and the ashes of
their only
son, Arthur, are buried in a family plot on the ranch.
When little
Arthur died of diphtheria, his parents cremated him in
the living
room fireplace and placed his ashes in an urn on the
mantel.
Ever since, the boy's gasping ghost has been seen in the white
guesthouse
next to the ranch house. It was there the child lay
quarantined,
struggling for a deep breath, his lonely cries filling the
crisp night
air.
LOCATION
Hempstead
is thirty eight miles northwest of Houston on U.S. Highway
290. The
ranch is private property four miles northeast of Hempstead
on Whiting
Chapel Road.
