BROOKS HOUSE
A pipe-smoking ghost haunts this Victorian house. Former residents
have reported smelling pipe smoke and hearing the footsteps of the
ghost just before he makes an appearance. In 1967, the tall,
mustached figure tried to crawl in bed with a woman sleeping in an
upstairs bedroom, but she made it clear she did not want any company
and the apparition vanished. Once, the ghost was asked to leave the
bathroom while a lady undressed. The amorous, though polite, specter
has been sensed by both guests and residents of the house, but no one
has ever identified him. The house was built in 1890 by the Hertberg
family, and Purchased in 1909 by the &rooks family. It was the home of
Cadet Sidney Brooks, Jr., for whom Brooks Air Force Base was named.
The twenty-two-year-old pi~ lot died on November 13, 1917, when he
crashed during a training exercise.
