ALAMO |
|
when this
mission was first established in 1718, it was known as
San Antonio
de Valero. It is thought that spirits dating back to
its founding
kept the old Franciscan mission from being destroyed
over a
century later. On March 6, 1836, after thirteen days of siege,
Mexican
forces led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna overran
the Alamo
and killed every armed defender at the outpost. He ordered
all 184
bodies dumped into a mass grave and left orders that the Alamo
itself
be torn down to the ground. Rut when Mexican engineers started
tearing
into the walls, ghostly hands protruded to stop them and
workers
fled in fear. Some of the phantom hands held glowing "torches,"
and a thundering
voice called out promising a horrible death to anyone
who desecrated
the walls. Today the Alamo still stands, much as it
was on
that fateful day in 1836, and tourists staying at the nearby
Menger
Hotel still report seeing grotesque apparitions emerging from
the old
mission walls.
