Lennox Lewis (37-1-1, 29 KO's) captured the undisputed heavyweight championship
on November 13, 1999, when he defeated Evander Holyfield (W12). The
35-year-old native of London, England finally heard the words "Winner
and NEW Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World....Lennox Lewis."
and with that became the first British fighter in over a century to
earn that distinction. Culminating his amateur career by beating Riddick
Bowe to win the super-heavyweight Gold Medal in the 1988 Olympics, Lewis became
the third boxer (along with Joe Frazier in 64 and George Foreman in
68) to earn both honors (Ali and Patterson won gold in lighter divisions).
Since beating Holyfield, Lewis has defended his title twice, winning
both on dramatic second round knockouts. On April 29, 2000 at Madison
Square Garden, Lewis knocked out Michael Grant with a devastating uppercut.
On July 15, Lewis returned to England to defend the title on his home
soil and knocked out Francois Botha (TKO 2). A three-punch combination
lifted Botha off the canvas and almost knocked him completely out of
the ring.
David Tua (37-1, 32 KO's) has stopped his last seven opponents. The
27-year-old Aopo, Samoa native possesses the most powerful left hook
in the sport and owns one of its sturdiest chins. After winning the
Bronze medal in the 1992 Olympics, Tua stopped his first nine opponents
as a professional, all inside three rounds. On March 15, 1996, on a
card highlighted "Young Heavyweights" Tua stole the show when he blasted
John Ruiz in 19 seconds, setting an HBO record for quickest knockout
in the cable networks 28 year history. In his last bout on July 21,
2000, Tua knocked out Robert Daniels in three rounds (KO 3).
