NEW YORK (April 29, 2000 1:50 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Undisputed world heavyweight champion Lennox
Lewis poked fun at promoter Don King and ex-champion Mike Tyson during an
appearance on the David Letterman television show aired here early Saturday.
The British boxer takes on unbeaten American champion Michael Grant later
Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
In the interview filmed earlier in the week at studios just a few blocks
away from the fight arena, Lewis spoke of how King has shifted titles among his
fighters and kept Lewis waiting almost eight years for a unification chance.
Lewis also lammented King's legal moves that forced the champion to
surrender the World Boxing Association title, one of three he won from Evander
Holyfield last November.
"It doesn't seem like boxing interests him," Lewis said. "He has been bad
for me. He kept me frozen out for so long. Now I'm undisputed champion and he
has weaseled his way back in."
Regarding Tyson, who plans to fight Lou Savarese in June at Milan or
Glasgow, Lewis said he does not see a matchup any time soon with the only major
fighter of his era whom he has not beaten.
"I don't think he's too serious about it right now," Lewis said. "He got
good when he was young. All of a sudden he had some life experiences and he hit
a plateau. Now he's hanging about, doing some movies and having fights once in
a while."
But Lewis also realizes that if the time is right, he would enjoy a rich
payday against the convicted rapist and assailant who once bit off a piece of
Holyfield's ear.
"Mike Tyson's name is synonymous with money," Lewis said. "If we get in the
ring and have a fight, he'll want to pull my hair or something."
Letterman encouraged Lewis to make a prediction, but the fighter would not.
But the talk show host did leave him with a piece of advice against Grant.
"Drop him in two so people can go home -- two rounds, just something to
turn his lights out," Letterman said. "Bang. Bang. Bang. Good night."
