Q & A: Don King!

Last week, Lennox Lewis and Don King were in Africa discussing the possibility of working with each other. After yesterday's fire truck donation ceremony in New York City, Fightnews spoke to King and attempted to find out if any agreements were reached between DKP and Lewis.

When you were in Africa with Lennox, did you come to any agreements with each other?
Lennox and I enjoyed a good relationship and good conversation. Hopefully things will come to fruition from that conversation.

Well... What was discussed?
Lennox was discussing retirement or giving up the belts. So, I think I should let HIM make that announcement because it's his life.

What do you think Lennox will do?
We did talk about him giving up one of the belts and we'll find out if he is or not.

Has Lennox shown interest in being promoted by DKP?
Yes. He's shown great interest. We just have to see how we can make that work.

What would it take to make it work?
Me.

After you, then what would it take?
Then the world. Once I put it together, it's gonna be good for the whole world. There will be a lot of exciting things that he can do that will be very good for himself.

If you do put 'it together', what might these 'exciting things' be?
I have to go to my creative juices to find out what my plan would be. Everything I do is with capitalism and design, rather than frustration and misguided emotionalism. I'm looking forward to sitting down at the table of brotherhood and supping with him together. We need to see what we can build upon.

I thought you were both 'supping together' in Africa.
We will sup again!

What's going on with you and Mike Tyson? Are you still talking to Shelly about working with Tyson?
Of course. I'm always interested in working with a fellow American. Some of us get limited in our views. People that are your friends, you end up turning on them thinking that they are your enemy. Once Mike clears that cancer of the brain, my door is always open to him. He was one of the first guys that I done a lot of good things with. I have nothing evil to say about him or anything degrading. Mike is a fellow human being and he has his ideas and if those ideas can't be corrected by conversation - which he has never had with me - then we have to correct it within our system of justice. It's a sad commentary because it is dividing our community.

How is it dividing the community?
When we fight over petty disputes and frustrations, we will have people chosing sides....some with me and some with Mike - and that's dividing our community.

'Petty dispute'? It's a $100 million 'petty dispute'.
Yeah, well.... I got $110 million on him! So, what is that?! If you are going to give significance to his 100, you gotta give significance to my 110 against him! None of it is beneficial to either one of us. We both lose and the community loses. The ones that want to believe me and be on my side - and the ones that want to believe him and be on his side. In the mean time, before it can be adjudicated in the courtroom, we are divided. That is the age old theory in this system - to divide and conquer. What I'm trying to do is overcome that and change it to a better quality of promoting friendship, uninimity and constricting negatism to it's narrowest form. There's no negativism in me. I want to be able to work together. Working together works. Black and white alike, side by side, shoulder to shoulder, back to back. We have to overcome the evil that's out there!!
