OCTOBER ARCHIVE
|
october 26, 2:44 am
I'm a little unsure what you all want today. Luckily, I've had a
little help from my friends. . .
The infamous Peter Bothum worships Dayton, Ohio's Guided By Voices, a lo-fi
turned hi-fi band, a band that can say "we write song fragments" and be proud.
And GBV loves Pete, especially b/c his Rockpile review of their latest
album scored a star rating on the band's official web
site. I myself have seen Bob Pollard & crew in concert more than once and he's
always exceptionally drunk. That's why his
hangover advice could be a boon to us all: "Just keep sleeping until it's
gone," Pollard imparts, making it sound as easy as, oh, writing a perfect pop song.
"If you get up, you feel like shit. If you practice long enough, you don't get
hangovers any more. So keep it up! Persevere! But it's kind of tough if you have a job
that requires you getting up, isn't it?" For a more basic primer of GBV lore,
chose from this listing (I like Salon's interview).
The notorious Kristin Collins went to the NC state fair today, but "the
gates clinked closed and the Ferris wheel stopped spinning" before we could join her.
But if you read this,
you might taste the "sugary magic of the fair" too.
I just don't understand. This is some
girl's webcam, and you can, like, watch her looking at the computer screen and such.
Lame.
If you're still unsure about weblogs, check out Jennifer's Metapita pita (a "pita" is
just a clever interface for anyone/everyone to use and do this crap). That site quickly
led me to the Anybody Pita where YOU can log
on and add any link your little black heart desires. And, of course, you must
visit Catherine's Pita. Everyone should.
I'll leave you with the Steve Buscemi
Worship Page. Aww yeah. |

"Spike would tell me, 'I don't think John Malkovich would
do it that way,' " Malkovich says, barely betraying a smile.
All of a sudden there's a whirlpool of Spike Jonze information sucking me in. Sunday's
W.Post had a piece on the local boy (born Adam Spiegel in nearby Bethesda, Md.) who
morphed into the coolest video/commercial/ movie director known to man. Do you realize
that any truly memorable commercial in recent memory was his? And all the great music
videos? "Being John Malkovich"
opens Friday and that's why Sunday's NYTimes feed their
jonze, too.
Two weeks ago the Washington City Paper ran a cover story called "My
So-Called Stalker." People in town are still talking about
"Theresa" and her mesmerizing account of years of absolute hell. I suggest you
print it up (warning: it is long) and take a look. The W.Post ran a
follow-up story a few days later (10/13, page B1) when "Ron" finally
surrenders and the district police apologize for their shozzy (a.k.a. snail-slow) response
to a deadly situation.
Just discovered: RockOnTV.com provides a
daily grid of all the music appearances on television. Do you realize Tony Bennett will be
on "Good Morning America" today? Or that Dolly Parton does a cameo voice on a
7:30 p.m. "Simpsons" re-run?
Annie Leibovitz takes all the great celebrity portraits. So it's interesting to learn
about her.
"Touch my ass if you're qualified." All the lyrics to Beck's new
album are now
available.
How'd They find out? |

I'm afraid. Very afraid. This, you can see, is my fledgling foray
into the weblogging world. And I am so drastically far behind. But since tonight I asked
my friends and family to tune in, I'm going to give a bit of a primer (in case you need
it. If not . . . whatever.)
"Weblogs - described by one of their creators as the
'pirate radio stations' of the Web, are a new, personal, and determinedly non-hostile
evolution of the electric community. They are also the freshest example of how people use
the Net to make their own, radically different new media."
So says Jon Katz of slashdot.org. I found his
"Anatomy of a
Weblog" article on bradland.com's page of Weblog Culture links. You see, all
these people out there are scouring the Wide Web everyday and discovering things grand
& small for you to learn. The amount of information (useful or not) is awe-inspiring.
Jorn Barger's Robot Wisdom logs a mind-boggling
amount of headlines everyday. So does Jim Romenesko at Obscure Store and Mediagossip.com. Is this at all interesting to you?
Why not try Bring the Rock. Here college guy Jason
Fagone brings you daily indie-music news. Good good good. And check out metacontent. It seems to be
non-functioning at the moment, but it has little (helpful) blurbs about the many top
weblogs in circulation.
I suppose I'm just one of the lemmings trying to jump off the cliff. We'll see what
happens. . . .
I'd like to think I'm psychic, cutting-edge or something. "Atlantic
Unbound" today writes an article on the phenomenon
of Weblogs and how Epinions.com is the first to cash in on the hysteria. Yep. I was
there. Not first. It goes along with the Post's not-too-insightful look at how the "Internet
sells better than sex and crime." Is this good or bad?
A ranking of the best Web sites?
I think that's what this is, from POV mag. It looks like something I should read. If I had
the time.
This is an old
article from Salon but I want all the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" doubters to
read it. But I just know you won't. |
october 21, 2:42 am
Today I learned about Pokemon. It wasn't on purpose, just part of
my job. Do you realize that "Pokemon" is the name of a species of
battling monsters? Apparently, WB's Saturday cartoon is now the top-rated children's' show
(3.1 million kiddies tune in for hours on end). On Nov. 12, Ash Ketchum, Pikachu and Co.
will hit the big screen
and three new Pokemon characters will be introduced. No kidding. Snubbull, I choose you .
. . yadda yadda yah.
I'm afraid there's too much on the Web, especially for people with flighty
attention spans like me (actually, I think the Internet has honed my lack of
focus to an upsetting degree. but that's another issue). I signed up to Epinions.com tonight (thanks to a plug from camworld). Here, normal whackjobs write personal
reviews of just about anything - movies, web sites, appliances, golf clubs, national
parks. Someone at the site reads & rates the "usefulness" of your review, I
suppose to help users wade through the myriad of opinions on display. Reviewers actually
earn money depending on how many people read his/her blurb. Naturally, I signed
up. Coming soon: "Harold
and Maude" and Me.
Some dude is writing a book about Beck called "Beautiful Monstrosity" (and posting parts of it). I couldn't
even begin to read it so I, ahem, it must suck.
The Post alerted me to local library-haunter Adam Balutis, a 17-year-old book reviewing
phenomenon. For five years, he's been critiquing young adult novels and posting his opinions. But he's
good. He has, in fact, inspired me to propose Robert
Cormier's "Tenderness" as the next selection for the nearly defunct zbookclub.
I am Leanne's plummeting
blood sugar levels. Gimme some candy and good night. |
october 20, 3:19 am
Is anyone else upset that "Midnite Vultures" by the one
and only Beck Hansen will
not be out until Nov. 23 (instead of the reported Nov. 16)? Come on, music industry people
- why the shenanigans? Of course, I do have the "SexxLaws"
12" single. On clear vinyl. But, uh, I have no turntable.
On that musical note, some Beck-obsessed kids pointed me to gemm.com and sirencd.com
as sites for hard-to-find music. I also highly recommend mysimon.com for comparison shopping. They might just
point you to 800.com which has free
shipping. yeow.
I'm working the night shift again. To me, this means I don't have to do awkward
things like wear skirts,
tuck my shirt
in. But I can't really dress
in leather, either (there's no one to impress).
It's official: If I ever own a dog, he/she will be named Banff.
Right now, I'm wishing this
song would play on the jukebox in the Fox and Hounds. And, yeah, I would
need to be there. Drinking a gin & tonic. |
october 19, 2:49 am
Hello again, family and friends. Today I sat on my couch alot
and tried to finish reading a book by George
Pelecanos. Then I came to work and found out my boss thinks I'm
"irresponsible" for requesting a vacation day next month to see one of my favorite bands. Hmmph. As I always say: I
dinnae ken aboot that.
I'm working on this lame-o little poetry
thing to give to some of my peeps as a semi-holiday present. I'm most excited about it.
Not sure if anyone else is.
There's so many movies
to catch up on. Did anyone out there see "Fight Club" and feel like
discussing? I have many theories. This is Leanne's hyperactive analyzation gland and I
need some relief. |
