THE WORD OF GOD

Acts 2 & 1 Corinthians 12 & 14

A gift from the Spirit Acts 2:1-6

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come [50 days after the crucifixion], they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them cloven [or separated] tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues [or languages], as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

The languages of the world Acts 2:7-11

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, "Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues [or languages] the wonderful works of God".

A fulfilment of prophecy Acts 2:12-21

12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, "What means this?" 13 Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine". 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said to them, "You men of Judea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and listen to my words, 15 for these are not drunk, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day [9:00am]".

16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel [2:28-32];

17 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come. 21 And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved".

Jesus has come forth from the grave Acts 2:22-28

22 "You men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, [was] a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know. 23 Him, being delivered [to you] by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God,
you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.
24 Whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that He should be held of it".

25 "For David speaks concerning Him [Psalm 16:8-11],

‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for He is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. 26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad. Moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope, 27 because You will not leave my soul in hell [the grave], neither will You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life. You shall make me full of joy with Your countenance’."

David is still waiting for his resurrection Acts 2:29-35

29 "Men and brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that His soul was not left in hell [the grave], neither did His flesh see corruption".

32 "This Jesus has God raised up, of which we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, He has shed [or sent] forth this, which you now see and hear.

34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he says himself [Psalm 110:1],

‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit You on My right hand, 35 until I make Your foes Your footstool’."

This was a sign to them Acts 2:36-41

36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God has made that same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ".
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles, "Men and brothers, what shall we do?"

38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you [too] shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call".

40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, "Save yourselves from this untoward [or rejecting] generation". 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added to them about three thousand souls…

All Christians are equal in God's sight 1 Corinthians 12:1-3

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers [and sisters], I would not have you ignorant. 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, even as you were led, 3 wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

But their gifts are unequal 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

4 Now there are diversities [or differences] of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations [or supervisions], but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which works all in all.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit with. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues [or languages]; to another the interpretation of tongues.

11 But all these works that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally [individually] as He will.

The church is like a human body 1 Corinthians 12:12-20

12 For as the [human] body is one, and has many members [or parts], and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the [human] body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, "Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body", is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear shall say, "Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body", is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now has God set the members every one of them in the body, as it has pleased Him. 19 And if they were all one member, where were the [rest of the] body? 20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

All need each other to survive 1 Corinthians 12:21-26

21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you": nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you". 22 No, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary. 23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we [should] bestow more abundant honour; and [then] our unlovely parts [would] have more abundant comeliness [or beauty], 24 for our handsome parts have no need.

But God has tempered [or joined] the [spiritual] body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked. 25 That there should be no schism [or division] in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. 26 And when one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or [when] one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

The "body" is Christ’s 1 Corinthians 12:27-31

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 28 And God has set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But covet earnestly [or desire to have] the best gifts: and yet I show to you a more excellent way…

It is good to desire gifts to help others 1 Corinthians 14:1-5

1 Follow after charity [or Christian love], and desire spiritual gifts, but rather [pray] that you may prophesy, 2 for he that speaks in an unknown tongue [or language] speaks not to men, but to God, for no man understands him. However in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

3 But he that prophesies [or teaches] speaks to men to edification [or for their good], and exhortation [encouragement], and comfort. 4 He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies [or strengthens only] himself, but he that prophesies edifies [or builds up] the church. 5 I would that you all spoke with tongues [for that can be useful as at Pentecost], but rather that you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

The reason for this gift 1 Corinthians 14:6-14

6 Now, brothers [and sisters], if I come to you speaking with tongues [or foreign languages], what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation [from God], or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9 So likewise you, except you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? For you shall speak into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification [or meaning]. 11 However, if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaks a barbarian [or foreigner], and he that speaks shall be a barbarian to me.

12 Even so you, forasmuch as you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

The Spirit and common sense 1 Corinthians 14:15-17

15 What is it then? I will pray with the Spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the Spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Else when you shall bless [or say "Grace"] with the Spirit, how shall he that occupies the room of the unlearned say "Amen" at your giving of thanks, seeing he understands not what you say? 17 For you verily give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

Teaching is needed in the church 1 Corinthians 14:18-20

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all. 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 20 Brethren, be not children in understanding, howbeit in malice be you children, but in understanding be men.

Tongues are so unbelievers can understand correctly - prophesying is for the church 1 Corinthians 14:21-25

21 In the law [the Old Testament] it is written,

"With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak to this people; and yet for all that will they not hear Me, says the Lord" [See Isaiah 28:11-12].

22 Because of this tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not. But prophesying serves not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are mad?

24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believes not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all [or everything], he is judged of all [things by the Spirit]. 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest [to him]; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Have order and calm in the church 1 Corinthians 14:26-28

26 How is it then, brothers [and sisters]? When you come together, every one of you has a psalm [a song], has a doctrine [Bible study], has a tongue [a language], has a revelation [a message from God], has an interpretation. Let all things be done to edifying [or building up].

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course [i. e. in turn]; and let one interpret [what each one says]. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Have teachers too 1 Corinthians 14:29-33

29 Let the prophets speak two or three [in their turn], and let the other [someone else] judge [or guide the meeting]. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sits by, let the first hold his peace. 31 For you may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, 33 for God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Corinthian women were very argumentative 1 Corinthians 14:34-40

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted to them to speak. But they are commanded to be under obedience, as also says the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36 What? Came the word of God out from you? Or came it to you only? 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Wherefore, brothers [and sisters], covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
