Compare these verses with Matthew 27:33-54

1 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar,
a psalm of David.

The cry of Jesus Psalm 22:1

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My roaring [or calling out]?"

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

On the cross Matthew 27:45-46

45 Now from the sixth hour [noon] there was darkness over all the land to the ninth hour [3pm]. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?". That is to say, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

His thoughts while on the cross Psalm 22:2-5

2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You hear not; and in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But You are holy, O You that inhabit the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in You: they trusted, and You did deliver them. 5 They cried to You, and were delivered: they trusted in You, and were not confounded.

His feelings on the cross Psalm 22:6-8

6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7 All they that see Me laugh Me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 "He trusted on the LORD that He would deliver Him: let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him".

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The attitude of His followers Luke 24:21

21 But we trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel…

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

Left alone Psalm 69:20-21

20 Reproach has broken My heart, and I am full of heaviness. And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none. And for comforters, but I found none.

21 They gave Me also gall for My meat, and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The fulfilment John 19:28-29

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst". 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar [a type of wine], and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop and put it to His mouth.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

But it had a drug in it Matthew 27:24

24 They gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall, and when He had tasted thereof, He would not drink [because He did not want His senses dulled].

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The reason for His feelings 2 Corinthians 5:21

21 He has made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

He is our peace Isaiah 53:4-5

4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

His trust on the cross Psalm 22:9-13

9 But You are He that took Me out of the womb: You did make Me hope when I was upon My mother's breasts. 10 I was cast upon You from the womb: You are My God from My mother's belly. 11 [Because of this] be not far from Me [now]; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12 Many bulls [symbols of false religion] have compassed Me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset Me round. 13 They gaped upon Me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

His physical experience on the cross Psalm 22:14-18

14 I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of My bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and My tongue cleaves to My jaws; and You have brought Me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed Me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet.
17 I may tell all My bones: they look and stare upon Me. 18 They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My vesture.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The fulfilment John 19:23-24

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part. And also His coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24 They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be", that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They parted My raiment among them, and for My vesture they did cast lots". These things therefore the soldiers did.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

His plea on the cross Psalm 22:19-21

19 But be not You far from Me, O LORD: O My strength, haste You to help Me. 20 Deliver My soul from the sword; My darling [My life] from the power of the dog. 21 Save Me from the lion's mouth [death]: for You have heard Me from the horns of the unicorns [horn = power. See Jeremiah 48:25].

A change of attitude Psalm 22:22

22 I will declare Your name to My brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise You.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The reason for the change Luke 23:39-42

39 And one of the malefactors [criminals] which were hanged [beside Him] railed [or turned] on Him, saying, "If you be the Christ, save yourself and us". 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, seeing you are in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds. But this Man has done nothing amiss".

42 And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom".

The answer Luke 23:43

43 And Jesus said to him, Verily, I say to you today, [even while we hang on our crosses] you shall be with Me in paradise.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

His faith was such a comfort to Jesus Psalm 22:23-26

23 You that fear the LORD, praise Him; all you the seed of Jacob, glorify Him; and fear [or respect] Him, all you the seed of Israel. 24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the Afflicted; neither has He hid His face from Him; but when He cried to Him, He heard.

25 My praise shall be of You in the great congregation [of the universe]: I will pay My vows before them that fear [or respect] Him. 26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek Him: your heart shall live for ever.

The certainty of redemption Psalm 22:27-29

27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and He is the governor among the nations. 29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust [of the grave] shall bow before Him: and none can keep alive his own soul.

A special group of the future Psalm 22:30-31

30 A seed shall serve Him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. 31 They shall come, and shall declare His righteousness to a people that shall be born, that He has done this.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The song of faith Psalm 23:1-6

1 A Psalm of David [and now Christ’s].

The LORD is My shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes Me to lie down in green pastures:
He leads Me beside the still waters.

3 He restores My soul:
He leads Me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
4 Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for You are with Me;

Your rod and Your staff they comfort Me.
5 You prepare a table before Me in the presence of My enemies:
You anoint My head with oil;
My cup runs over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow Me all the days of My life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

A verse to live by Psalm 110:1

1 The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit You at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool".

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

The triumphant song Psalm 24:1-2

1 A Psalm of David.

The earth is the LORD's and the fullness of it; the world, and they that dwell therein. 2 For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

An important question Psalm 24:3-6

3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD?
Or who shall stand in His holy place?
4 He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 This is [to be the condition of] the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Your face, O [God of] Jacob. Selah. [The word Selah tells us to stop, and think prayerfully on what we have just read].

A song of praise Psalm 24:7

7 Lift up your heads, O you gates [of heaven]; and be you lift up, you everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

A query from the gate-keepers Psalm 24:8

8 Who is this King of glory?

The answer from the group Psalm 24:8

The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

The question repeated Psalm 24:9-10

9 Lift up your heads, O you gates; even lift them up, you everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

His companions Ephesians 4:8

8 …When he ascended up on high, He led a multitude of captives [with Him] and gave gifts to men.

œ œ œ œ œ œ œ

He entered in Hebrews 9:12

12 … by His own blood [or sacrifice] He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
