First Annual Freeze Your Butt Off Backpacking Trip to West Virginia Well, I was just about to step out to REI and pick up a zero degree sleeping bag for the West Virginia trip, but reason took over. I've been down with denge fever for 4 or 5 days, and I started feeling better late Sunday night (2/21). The trip was delayed from Sunday to Tuesday (2/23), which was fine, except it wouldn't be enough time to properly recover. You know how bad denge fever can be. It would be my first solo, which normally wouldn't mean much, but with the low temperatures, unfamiliar terrain, with snow cover and ice raised some safety concerns. I don't have any problems with being flexible during a trip to call it quits when necessary. I did struggle over cancelling this one for the better part of a week. Sigh. Well, I need to do the responsible thing. After all, I do have to think of my family. Who's going to support that rotten bunch of freeloaders if I wind up dead? Considering all these things, it was difficult to justify the trip no matter how bad I wanted to go. As a small compensation, I am including the report from the trip that Tom Terrific and I took in search of Thunderstruck Rock. It's been edited and is a more complete than the original report that was posted at Trail Talk. Take me back to the ECT Main Page This page hosted by Geocities. Get your own Free Home Page |
