"If
you believe in God, don't try to understand Him; pray that He understands
you. If you don't believe in God, try to understand Nature."
"More
than talent and skill, the healing power of a medicine man is his compassion."
"If
you can take in stride the vagaries of nature and laugh at the foibles
of mankind, you are completely at peace with yourself and the world."
"Never
underestimate your enemy even if that enemy is an imagined one; neither
must you over-estimate your friend even if the only friend you have is
yourself."
"A
country can be free and yet its people slaves, but a free people cannot
have a country which is not free."
"True
happiness is an inner state of being. You've got to have it, whether people
see it or not. Appearing to be happy does not make you happy. You're just
making impressions but you're lying to yourself."
"There
is no such thing as the pursuit of happiness. One pursues momentary enjoyments,
not happiness because happiness is right within you."
Here
is something I learned during my high school days in the early 1930's:
"A
smile costs nothing but creates much; it happens in a flash but the memory
lasts forever. It is something that cannot be begged, borrowed or stolen,
but it is something that can be freely given. So, if in your rush and hurry,
you meet someone who is too weary to give a smile, then leave him with
one of yours, for no one needs a smile quite as much as he who has none
left to give."
- Wilbert Nesbitt ; as quoted by AGP
"The
man who uses his brains always controls the man who uses only his hands."
"Love
is the absence of hate and the continued presence of affection, compassion
and understanding."
"Love
is a gift and the giver may not be known, but it is something that cannot
be returned."
"It
is impossible to love everybody, but we do not have to hate anyone."
"We
cannot avoid moments of sadness. But that's no reason to despair. Logic
dictates that there must be a joyful reason for every sad event. Look for
that reason."
"I
yield to no one the independence of my spirit nor the freedom of my conscience
- I prize most my peace of mind."
I
wrote this long ago:
"If
you must have religion, don't leave it behind, inside the churches and
at the altars of your homes; take it with you wherever you go. Don't just
utter or mumble your prayers; live by them. Don't be religious for other
people; be religious for yourself. Others may mistake you as irreligious
but that does not make you one - maybe they are. Religious appearances
are most often fanciful than factual."
"Still
there are imponderables against which wisdom cannot cope and must
fail."
"The wiser a man becomes, the less he gets involved."
