'I AM WHO AM'

"Moses said to God, 'If I come to the people of Israel and say to them,
"The God of your fathers has sent me to you"' and they ask me,
"What is His name?" what shall I say to them?'
God said to Moses,

'I AM WHO I AM.'

And He said say this to the people of Israel,
"I AM has sent me to you"... this is my name forever,
and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations."

"In revealing His mysterious name, YAHWEH ('I AM HE WHO IS', 'I AM WHO AM' or 'I AM WHO I AM'), God says who He is and by what name He is to be called. This divine name is mysterious just as God is mystery.
It is at once a name revealed and something like the refusal of a name,
and hence it better expresses God as what He is-infinitely
above everything that we can understand or say:
He is the 'hidden God', His name is ineffable, and
He is the God who makes Himself close to men."

"The Father Heart of God Do you really mean to say that you believe there is a God ? One of the questions we all ask ourselves is: "Is there a God ?". if so, what sort of God is He ? The Bible makes it very dear that for those who accept Him as such through Jesus Christ, God is Father and His father heart longs for us to know Him. Does it all then depend on what the word 'father' evokes in you? Perhaps you have had a very warm and affectionate relationship with your earthly father, or perhaps he was indifferent or even cruel and absent to you, perhaps you never even knew him. It may take time for you to understand but you need to be assured there is a Father in heaven who knows you and really does love you and even wishes to heal your wrong images of Him. But what is God the Father really like ? God the Father is not a Father Christmas - an impersonal distributor of gifts. God our Creator has a heart full of mercy; He is a Person who yearns to share His love, care and tenderness with you and also to be loved by you. God is love and you cannot stop Him loving you even if you tried. "God is love .... There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear. . . ·1 John 4:16 Then why all this talk about sin and hell ? Hell is the refusal of this love and the refusal to be transformed by it. Because of his sin, man was unable to reach God's love, so God dealt with the problem by coming Himself. Jesus, God's love revealed, took all our sin, guilt, shame and hurt upon himself on the Cross (Jn 3:16). Believing this Good News is what the Gospel invites us to and what the Church has been calling man to. Hell is the refusal of this love and the refusal to obey Him and the Gospel of salvation. It is choosing rather to live our own way. But why don't I experience this love and why does God seem so distant ? The sun shines bright and warm even on a wet and cloudy day. However, the dark thick clouds prevent us from experiencing the light and the warmth of the sun. The same thing goes for sin. Sin and indifference block us from receiving or even perceiving God's love. By turning away from it and really seeking God in Jesus we can experience the Father's forgiveness and love. But isn't it old-fashioned to speak about sin ? Jesus says that you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. "Repent and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out and times of refreshing may come from the Lord" Acts 3:19. Sin is self-destructive and it grieves God's heart Furthermore, sin is opening ourselves to the devil and his destructive forces. Repentance is changing our mind about sin and accepting God's truth. It is not misery - it is the joy-ride out of it ! But I'm not too religious and besides, there are many religious hypocrites. If by religious you mean a person who seeks to observe external rituals without relating to God sincerely and who, furthermore, adopts a condescending attitude to those around, you're quite right. It is for people like this that Jesus reserved His strongest condemnation. True religion is lived from the heart. What about my deep hurts ? Jesus still heals. Tear out the pages in the gospel where Jesus healed and you will be left without a gospel. Jesus is still the same, yesterday, today and forever and is still willing to heal your broken heart and to give you a real hope for the future, most especially eternal life. Besides, in our suffering He gives us the grace to go on. In practice, what can I do ? The Lord is near to you and promises "The same Lord is Lord of all, and richly blesses all who call on Him for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved " Rom 10: 12,13 - Speak to Jesus simply as if you were speaking to a friend and sincerely ask Him to reveal Himself to you. - Ask the Lord forgiveness for all your past sins. It is truly a freeing experience to approach Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. - Read the Gospels - but before you do, ask Jesus to help you understand His Word. - Find someone you may know has a sincere relationship with the Lord so that he/she may help you start out. - Attending a group where other young people are experiencing the joy and free- freedom Jesus promises to His Church is an effective way of keeping your faith alive."

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

"And God spoke all these words, saying,
 "I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondage.
"You shall have no other gods before me.
"You shall not make for yourself a graven image,
or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
you shall not bow down to them or serve them;
for I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children
to the third generation of those who hate me,
but showing steadfast who to thousands
of those who love me and keep my commandments.
"You shall not take the Name of the Lord your God in vain;
for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days you shall labour, and do all your work;
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God;
in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter,
your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle,
or the sojourner who is within your gates;
for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day;
therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
 "Honour your father and your mother,
that your days may be long in the land
which the LORD your God gives you.
"You shall not kill.
"You shall not commit adultery.
"You shall not steal.
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
"You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant,
or his ox, or his ass,
or anything that is your neighbour's."
(Exodus 20:1-17)

"Anyone who breaks one of the
least of these commandments and teaches others
to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven,
but whoever practises and teaches these commands
will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
(Matthew 5:19)

1 YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND HIM ONLY
        SHALL YOU SERVE.

    "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your strength' (Dt 6:5)
    The first commandment summons man to believe in God, to hope in Him and to love Him above all else.
    'You shall worship the Lord your God' (Mt 4:10). Adoring God, praying to Him, offering him the worship that belongs to him, fulfilling the promises and vows made to Him, are acts of the virtue of religion which fall under obedience to the first commandment. The duty to offer God authentic worship concerns man both as an individual and as a social being.
    'Men of the present day want to profess their religion freely in private and in public' (DH 15).
    Superstition is a departure from the worship that we give to the true God. It is manifested in idolatry, as well as in various forms of divination and magic. Since it rejects or denies the existence of God, atheism is a sin against the first commandment. The veneration of sacred images is based on the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word of God. It is not contrary to the first commandment."
2 YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD IN
       VAIN.
    "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely...' But I say to you, Do not swear at all. ' O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!' (Ps 8:1). The second commandment enjoins respect for the Lord's name. The name of the Lord is Holy. The second commandment forbids every improper use of God's name. Blasphemy is the use of the name of God, of Jesus Christ, of the Virgin Mary, and of the saints in an offensive way. False oaths call on God to be witness to a lie. Perjury is a grave offence against the Lord who is always faithful to His promises. 'Do not swear whether by the Creator, or any creature, except truthfully, of necessity and with reverence' (St Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises 38). In Baptism, the Christian receives his name in the church. Parents, godparents and the pastor are to see that he be given a Christian name. The patron saint provides a model of charity and the assurance of his prayer. The Christian begins his prayers and activities with the Sign of the Cross: 'in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
    Spirit. Amen.' God calls each one by name (cf. Is 43:1)"
3 REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY, TO KEEP IT HOLY. SIX DAYS
      YOU SHALL LABOUR, AND DO ALL YOUR WORK; BUT THE
      SEVENTH DAY IS A SABBATH TO THE LORD YOUR GOD; IN IT
      YOU SHALL NOT DO ANY WORK.
    "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath. 'Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy' (Dt 5:12). 'The seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord' (Ex 31:15)
    The Sabbath, which represented the completion of the first creation, has been replaced by Sunday, which recalls the new creation inaugurated by the Resurrection of Christ.
    The Church celebrates the day of Christ's Resurrection on the 'eight day', Sunday, which is rightly called the Lord's Day (cf. SC 106). 'Sunday... is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church. On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass'. 'On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound... and abstain from these labours and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord's Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body'. The institution of Sunday helps all 'to be allowed sufficient rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social and religious lives'. Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord's Day."
4 HONOUR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER, THAT  YOUR DAYS MAY BE LONG IN THE LAND WHICH THE LORD YOUR GOD GIVES YOU.
       "'Honour your father and your mother' (DT 5:16; Mk 7:10).
According to the fourth commandment, God has willed that, after Him, we should honour our parents and those whom he has vested with authority for our good. The conjugal community is established upon the covenant and consent of the spouses. Marriage and family are ordered to the good of the spouses, to the procreation and education of children. 'The well-being of the individual person and of both human and Christian society is closely bound up with the healthy state of conjugal and family life' Children owe their parents respect, gratitude, just obedience assistance. Filial respect fosters harmony in all of family life. Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children in the faith, prayer and all the virtues. They have the duty to provide as far as possible for the physical and spiritual needs of their children. Parents should respect and encourage their children's vocations. They should remember and teach that the first calling of the Christian is to follow Jesus. Public authority is obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person and the conditions for the exercise of his freedom. It is the duty of citizens to work with civil authority for building up society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity and freedom. Citizens are obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order. 'We must obey God rather than men' (Acts 5:29). Every society's judgements and conduct reflect a vision of man, societies easily become totalitarian."
5 YOU SHALL NOT KILL. "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill: and whoever kills shall be liable to judgement.' But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgement."

""Don't you know that you yourselves are God's
temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? if anyone
destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for
God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple."
(1 Corinthians 3)

"'Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.'
'In (God's) hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind' (Job 12:10). Every human life, from the moment of conception until death, is sacred because the human person has been willed for its own sake in the image and likeness of the living and holy God. The murder of a human being is gravely contrary to the dignity of the person and the holiness of the Creator. The prohibition of murder does not abrogate the right to render an unjust aggressor unable to inflict harm. Legitimate defence is a grave duty for whoever is responsible for the lives of others or the common good. From its conception, the child has the right to life.
Direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, is a 'criminal' practise gravely contrary to the moral law. The church imposes the canonical penalty of excommunication for this crime against human life.
Because it should be treated as a person from conception, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for and healed like every other human being. Intentional euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. Suicide is seriously contrary to justice, hope and charity. It is forbidden by the fifth commandment. Scandal is a grave offence when by deed or omission it deliberately leads others to sin.
Because of the evils and injustices that all war brings with it, we must do everything reasonably possible to avoid it. The Church prays: 'From famine, pestilence and war, O Lord, deliver us.' The Church and human reason assert the permanent validity of the moral law during armed conflicts. Practises deliberately contrary to the law of nations and to its universal principles are crimes. 'The arms race is one of the greatest curses on the human race and the harm it inflicts on the poor is more than can be endured' (arms race-meaning all kinds of weaponry research and technological control)
'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God'"

6 YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.
  "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

"Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by
going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man
that makes him 'unclean.'"
(Mark 7:15-16)

"'Love is the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being' By creating the human being man and woman, God gives personal dignity equally to the one and the other. Each of them, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity. Christ is the model of chastity. Every baptised person is called to lead a chaste life, each according to his particular state of life.
Chastity means the integration of sexuality within the person.
It includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery.
Among the sins gravely contrary to chastity are masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual practises.
The covenant which spouses have freely entered into entails faithful love. It imposes on them the obligation to keep their marriage indissoluble. Fecundity is a good, a gift and an end of marriage. By giving life, spouses participate in God's fatherhood. The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouse do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilisation or contraception). Adultery, divorce, polygamy and free union are grave offences against the dignity of marriage."

""But at the beginning of creation God 'made them
male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his
father and mother and be united to his wife, and the
two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two,
but one. Therefore what God has joined together,
let man not separate."
When they were in the house again, the disciples
asked Jesus about this. He answered, 'Anyone who
divorces his wife and marries another woman commits
adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband
and marries another man, she commits adultery.""
(Mark 10:6-12)

"He went on: "What comes out of a man is what
makes him 'unclean'. For from within, out of men's
hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft,
murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness,
envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come
from inside and make a man 'unclean.'""
(Mark 7:20-23)
7 YOU SHALL NOT STEAL. "'You shall not steal' (Ex 20:15; Dt 5:19). 'Neither thieves, nor the greedy...., nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God' (1 Cor 6:10). The seventh commandment enjoins the practise of justice and charity in the administration of earthly goods and the fruits of men's labour. The goods of creation are destined for the entire human race. The right to private property does not abolish the universal destination of goods. The seventh commandment forbids theft. Theft is the usurpation of another's goods against the reasonable will of the owner. Every manner of taking and using another's property unjustly is contrary to the seventh commandment. The injustice committed requires reparation. Commutative justice requires the restitution of stolen goods. The moral law forbids acts which, for commercial or totalitarian purposes
 , lead to the enslavement of human beings, or to their being bought sold or exchanged like merchandise. The dominion granted by the Creator over the mineral, vegetable and animal resources of the universe cannot be separated from respect for moral obligations, including those towards generations to come. Animals are entrusted to man's stewardship; he must show them kindness. They may be used to serve the just satisfaction of man's needs.
The Church makes a judgement about economic and social matters when the fundamental rights of the person or the salvation of souls requires it. She is concerned with the temporal common good of men because they are ordered to the sovereign Good, their ultimate end. Man is himself the author, centre and goal of all economic and social life. The decisive point of the social question is that goods created by for everyone should in fact reach everyone in accordance with justice and with the help of charity. The primordial value of labour stems from men himself, its author and beneficiary. By means of his labour man participates in the work of creation. Work united to Christ can be redemptive. True development concerns the whole man. It is concerned with increasing each person's ability to respond to his vocation and hence to God's call. Giving alms to the poor is a witness to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice pleasing to God. How can we not recognise Lazarus, the hungry beggar in the parable (Lk 17:19-31), in the multitude of human beings without bread, a roof or a place to stay? How can we fail to hear Jesus: 'As you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me' (Mt 25:45)?"
8 YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR
        NEIGHBOUR. "It was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' Christ's disciples have 'put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness' (Eph 4:24). Truth or truthfulness is the virtue which consists in showing oneself true in deeds and truthful in words, and guarding against duplicity, dissimulation and hypocrisy. The Christian is not to 'be ashamed of testifying to our Lord' (2 Tim 1:8) in deed and word. Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith. Respect for the reputation and honour of persons forbids all detraction and calumny in word or attitude. Lying consists in saying what is false with the intention of deceiving the neighbour who has the right to the truth. An offence committed against the truth requires reparation. The golden rule helps one discern, in concrete situations, whether or not it would be appropriate to reveal the truth to someone who asks for it. 'The sacramental scene is inviolable'. Professional secrets must be kept. Confidences prejudicial to another are not to be divulged. Society has a right to information based on truth, freedom and justice. One should practise moderation and discipline in the use of the social communications media. The fine arts, but above all sacred art, 'of their nature are directed toward expressing in some way the infinite beauty of God in works made by human hands. Their dedication to the increase of God's praise and of His glory is more complete, the more exclusively they are devoted to turning men's minds devoutly toward God'." 9 YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE; SHALL
      NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S WIFE, OR HIS MANSERVANT,
      OR HIS MAIDSERVANT, OR HIS OX, OR HIS ASS, OR ANYTHING
      THAT IS YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S. "Every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
The ninth commandment warns against lust and carnal concupiscence The struggle against carnal lust involves purifying the heart and practising temperance. Purity of the heart enable us to see God: it enables us even now to see things according to God. Purification of the heart demands prayer, the practise of chastity, purity of intention and of vision. Purity of heart requires the modesty which is patience, decency and discretion. Modesty protects the intimate centre of the person."
10 YOU SHALL NOT COVET.... ANYTHING THAT IS YOUR
NEIGHBOUR'S. YOU SHALL NOT DESIRE YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE, HIS FIELD, OR HIS MANSERVANT, OR HIS MAIDSERVANT, OR HIS OX, OR HIS ASS, OR ANYTHING THAT IS YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S.
  "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Mt 6:21. The tenth commandment forbids avarice arising from a passion for riches and their attendant power. Envy is sadness at the sight of another's goods and the immoderate desire to have them for oneself. It is a capital sin. The baptised person combats envy through good will, humility and abandonment to the providence of God. Christ's faithful 'have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires' (Gal 5:24); they are led by the Spirit and follow His desires. Detachment from riches is necessary for entering the Kingdom of heaven. 'Blessed are the poor in spirit.' 'I want to see God' expresses the true desire of man. Thirst for God is quenched by the water of eternal life."

Temptation

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into
many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and
destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money,
have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
(1 Tim 6:9,10)

"Do not love the world or anything in the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For everything in the world-the cravings of sinful man,
the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does-
comes not from the Father but from the world.
The world and its desires pass away,
but the man who does the will of God lives forever."
(1 John 2:15-17)

"Be self-controlled and alert.
Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, standing firm in the faith,
because you know that your brothers throughout the world
are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."
(1 Peter 5:8-9)

"It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear
than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law."
(Luke 16:17)

"Let the little children come to me,
and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
I tell you the truth,
anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God
like a little child will never enter it."
(Mark 10:14-15)

 SIN

   "When tempted, no one should say,
"God is tempting me."
For God cannot be tempted by evil,
nor does He tempt anyone;
but each one is tempted when,
by his own evil desire,
he is dragged away and enticed.
Then, after desire has conceived,
it gives birth to sin; and sin,
when it is full-grown,
gives birth to death."
(James 1:13-15)

 Where Sin Abounded,
Grace Abounded All the More

        "Sin is present in human history; any attempt to ignore it or to give this dark reality any other names would be futile. To try to understand what sin is, one must first recognise the profound relation of man to God, for only in this relationship is the evil of sin unmasked in its true identity as humanity's rejection of God and opposition to Him, even as it continues to weigh heavy on human life and history.

Only the light of Divine Revelation clarifies the reality of sin and particularly of the sin committed at mankind's origins. Without the knowledge, Revelation gives of God, we cannot recognise sin clearly and we are tempted to explain it as merely a developmental flaw, a psychological weakness, a mistake, or the necessary consequence of an inadequate social structure, etc. Only in the knowledge of God's plan for man can we grasp that sin is an abuse of the freedom that God gives to created persons so that they are capable of loving Him and loving one another. "

If someone breaks a commandment does he go to hell?

We can never answer this question as we can never judge others, but God alone can judge. Repentance in the sacrament of reconciliation is the most important action a sinner carries out, showing God that he is ready to humiliate himself infront of Him, to be worthy to start a new and love again."

"He said to me,
"It is done, I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the Beginning and the End.
To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost
from the spring of the water of life.
He who overcomes will inherit all this,
and I will be his God and he will be my son.
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers,
the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts,
the idolaters and all liars-their place
will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.
This is the second death."
(Revelation 22:6-8)

LOVE

"Love does no harm to its neighbour.
Therefore love is the fulfilment of the law."
(Romans 13:10)

"He answered:
"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength and with all your mind':
and, 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'"
"'You have answered correctly,'
Jesus replied.
'Do this and you will live.'"
(Luke 10:27-28)

"Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy,
it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
(1Corinthians 13:4-7)

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,
but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all
knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,
but have not love,
I gain nothing."
(1Corinthians 13:1-3)

 ' You Did Not Abandon
Him to the Power of Death '

        "After his fall, man was not abandoned by God. On the contrary, God calls him and in a mysterious way heralds the coming victory over evil and his restoration from his fall. This passage in Genesis is called the Protoevangelium ('first gospel'): the first announcement of the Messiah and Redeemer, of a battle between the serpent and the Woman, and of the final victory of a descendant of hers.

The Christian tradition sees in this passage the announcement of the 'New Adam' who, because he 'became obedient unto death even death on a cross', makes amends superabundantly for the disobedience of Adam. Furthermore many Fathers and Doctors of the Church have seen the woman announced in the 'Protoevangelium' as Mary, the mother of Christ, the 'new Eve'. Mary benefited first of all and uniquely from Christ's victory over sin: she was preserved from all stain of original sin and by a special grace of God committed no sin of any kind during her whole earthly life.

But why did God not prevent the first man from sinning? St. Leo the Great responds, 'Christ's inexpressible grace gave us blessings better than those the demon's envy had taken away.' And St Thomas Aquinas wrote, 'There is nothing to prevent human nature's being raised up to something greater, even after sin; God permits evil in order to draw forth some greater good. Thus St Paul says, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more"; and the Exsultet sings, "O happy fault,.... which gained for us so great a Redeemer!"'"

 "... HE WILL PARDON YOU"
By Fr. Charles Kovari, S.J.

        "In 2 Chronicles we find this plea of the Lord: "If My people who are called by My name shall humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins and will heal their land."

It would appear that Our Lady at Garabandal was repeating this plea of her Son Jesus when she said, " "If you ask His forgiveness with sincere hearts, He will pardon you."

It is a common trick of Satan to induce someone into sin by putting before his eyes the mercy of God and the easiness to obtain His forgiveness. But as soon as the sin is committed Satan changes his strategy and now he convinces the poor sinner that he misused God's mercy by relying on it with temerity, and now he lost all of his hope for forgiveness. Satan may even tempt the sinner to commit suicide, as he did with Judas. Suicide without repentance would make the victory of Satan final.

And now I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

On the contrary God since the Old Testament stresses on His willingness to forgive even the greatest sinner: "If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all my statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of the crimes he commit-ted shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the virtue he has practised. Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord God. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live?" (Ezek. 18:21-23).

The Unforgivable Sin Distrusting God's mercy is a greater offence to God than any other sin we may have committed. There is only one kind of sin that cannot be forgiven: the final obduration in sins. This is called the sin against the Holy Spirit, or the unforgivable sin. In other words, if we die in the state of serious sin, we are lost, but as long as we are living, God is willing to forgive us."

Repentance

    "There are two important conditions for this forgiveness: First we must ask for it ourselves. It is rot enough that other people ask and pray for our conversion. We must cooperate with the grace of God obtained for us by those who intercede for us. We must admit our sinfulness and ask for the mercy of God. In other words, we must admit that we offended God, instead of trying to excuse our sins, repeating to ourselves that we cannot believe that the Church is right in teaching us that these actions are really sinful, " prohibited by God. We must cease to appeal to our dead conscience, saying that we do not feel any remorse of conscience because of our actions, though we know well, that they are against the Ten Commandments of God, or against the precepts of the Church.

Normally this admission should be made in sacramental confession. In this case an imperfect sorrow, based on fear of God's punishment is sufficient to obtain God's pardon. Those who cannot go to confession, either because they have no time for it, or because they do not belong to the Catholic or Orthodox Church, may obtain God's pardon by the sincere admission of their sinfulness accompanied by perfect contrition, which is based or the love of God. In case of imminent danger of life this may be the only way for all of us. Therefore it is very useful to elicit the act of perfect contrition frequently during our life, especially every evening before going to sleep."

Contrition

      "The second condition is that we must be sincere. This means the firm resolution to do everything we can in order to avoid relapsing into the serious sins of our past life. First of all we must avoid those occasions, companions which led us into these sins. Secondly, we must strengthen ourselves against unavoidable temptations by prayer and practising the opposite virtues. Thirdly, if due to our weakness we sin again, we should return to God as soon as we realize our mistake. This should be done by an act of perfect contrition or at least by an act of imperfect contrition, followed by a good confession as soon as possible. If someone continually confesses several serious sins, he might doubt his sincerity and even the validity of his previous confessions. But just the fact that after a good confession we became weak again and sinned seriously does not necessarily mean that we were not sincere. Only if we neglected all the precautions and disregard the use of supernatural means (i.e. prayer, the sacraments) to avoid the occasions of sin, may we doubt our sincerity  . But even in this case, we must ask our confessor to help us, to advise us on how we can be more successful in avoiding the same kind of sin in the future and, most importantly, remember that we can always go back to God with confidence in His mercy."

CONFESSION
RECONCILIATION
PENANCE

        "Only God forgives sins. Since He is the Son of God, Jesus says of Himself, 'The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins', and exercises this divine power: 'Your sins are forgiven.' Further, by virtue of His divine authority He gives this power to men to exercise in His name.

Christ has willed that in her prayer and life and action his whole Church should be the sign and instrument of the forgiveness and reconciliation that He acquired for us at the price of his Blood. But He entrusted the exercise of the power of absolution to the apostolic ministry which He charged with the 'ministry of reconciliation'. The apostle is sent out 'on behalf of Christ' with 'God making his appeal' through him and pleading: 'Be reconciled to God.'

The priest has this duty and power on behalf of God and he must make sure that he doesn't take this for granted.

The spiritual effects of the sacrament of Penance are:

-reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers grace;
-reconciliation with the Church;
-remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal sins;
-remission, at least in part, of temporal punishments resulting from sin;
-peace and serenity of conscience, and spiritual consolation;
-an increase of spiritual strength for the Christian battle.

Individual and integral confession of grave sins followed by absolution remains the only ordinary means of reconciliation with God and with the Church."

Lord Tennyson, the great English poet, made this profoundly truthful statement:- "More things are done by prayer than this world dreams of." That is, more things happen in this world as a result of somebody's prayers than we are conscious of.
