THE MAGAZINE COMMITTEE
What is a centenary without a magazine to record the history and the celebrations of the centenary itself? I volunteered to be on the committee and under the coordinating hand of Janet Everett we had initial meetings early in 1991. Preliminary contacts were made with past students and teachers for photos, memorabilia and stories etc. that could be published. We were also told that the official history written by the Department of Education would be ready in early 1992. Things were going smoothly until Janet, our hard working coordinator, moved house to Wagga with her family.
The coordination fell into my reluctant lap. It has turned out to be a busier than normal year with family health problems and a never ending barrage of assignments from a course I am doing at present. But with the support of our hard working committee -all busy people themselves, it all managed to come together. We decided to divide the work load and be responsible for each section. The committee consisted of Ted, Margaret, Karen, Betty and myself but there were others who took on responsibility for parts of the magazine.
- Ted Parker (ex-student) took on the "History of the Beverly Hills Area" and the 1920s which is the period he attended the school.
- Betty De Gunst (parent) used the official school history and other contributions by ex-students for "The Early Years".
- Margaret Chandler (teacher) adopted the 1950s because that was when her husband attended the school.
- Karen Ryce (nee Butler) attended the school in the 1960s and had to write that section from scratch as there was no official history written for that period.
- Lois Walker (ex-Infants' Mistress) compiled the 1970s as she was a teacher at BHPS at the time.
- Jodie Gatehouse and Dina Sotiraliis (ex-students) had to squeeze-in writing the 1980s section while studying for their H.S.C.
- Kay Campbell and Deborah King (teachers) compiled the 1990s as this was their first contact with the school.
- Jan Steinfurth and Robyn Collas (parents) wrote the section on the parents' associations through their long period of involvement with the school.
- Garry Shewan (ex-student) compiled the 1940s from his own recollections with reference to the official history.
So thank you all, especially to my wife, Leonie, who typed many pages into the computer in her "spare time". I am sure the magazine will be something to be proud of and that it will add to the continuing history of Beverly Hills Public School.
