At last the authoritative listing of the seven deadly virtues. This long awaited compilation (long awaited, because I have better things to do) is the result of a conversation I was having on the way back from a contra dance in January of 1996 (or thereabouts). Since we have the seven deadly sins, why not list the seven deadly virtues? Many suggestions sprang to mind immediately. Here is our initial list we came up with: Piety, Sobriety, Chastity, Ambiguity, Moderation, Conformity, Authority, Cheerfulness, Obedience, Punctuality, Modesty, Propriety, Righteousness, Objectivity, Maturity, Political Correctness, and of course Anal Reteniveness. (Just to remind you, the 7 deadly SINS are: Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Lust, Gluttony, Greed.)

Input was solicited from many sources in our search for the true seven. Alas, even the so-called experts couldn't agree on which were the correct ones. So for now, we will go with the majority vote of the experts. I am hoping to put together a form page here on the good-old WWW so that you, the informed reader can vote on your own choices.

And of course, the over-arching concept that guides all deadly virtues:

Moderation.
Or as we like to think of it:

"Moderation in all things, including moderation itself"

New ideas, suggested by the esteemed panel of voters, included such entries as: monogamy, initiative, vision, politeness, morality, meekness, perkiness, consistency, sensitivity, accuracy, clarity, humility, imagination, charity, studying, dedication, ambition, attitude, conscientiousness, industry, computer skills, and volunteerism. Many other suggestions were also made, but they are too heinous to report here for the general public.

Interestingly enough, the least voted choice was Modesty. Of courses it may have been Ambiguity, but I am not sure. Several people insisted that it was Authority, but I overruled them on that one (for obvious reasons). After the votes had been tallied, we received several votes for Punctuality, but these were, unfortunately, unable to be included.

It was also brought to our attention that the Utne Reader published a similar list in their September 1996 issue. I guess they saw the trend coming.

Enjoy!

This form may look good, but alas it is still unworkable. Someday I will figure out forms from Javascript and do this properly. Until then you will just have to email me your selections. I have the form up here in hopes that someday I will actually complete it. You can ignore it for now.
