This Girl's Life

Scott Charles

The red digits of the alarm clock provided the only light in Joe's bedroom. His cat, Socks, was curled in a ball on top of the spare pillow, softly purring. Joe's face was buried in his over-stuffed pillow, his sheet pulled to his waist and his left leg had managed to work its way into the chilled air of the room. The bare skin of his back gently raised and lowered with each breath.

Being a naturally heavy sleeper, it wasn't until the twenty-third ring that he twitched. Without opening his eyes, Joe lifted a heavy hand and let it fall on the night table next to his bed. His fingers groped blindly until they found what he was looking for. Joe lifted the receiver from it's cradle and put it to his ear.

"What?" He grunted, forgetting all his manners.

"Hey hon," Gwen said, sounding far too happy for Joe's tastes.

"Gwen?" Joe asked, his voice muffled by his pillow. He felt Socks moving to the foot of the bed where she curled and fell back to sleep.

"I couldn't sleep," Gwen stated in a child-like voice.

"Well, I could," Joe answered shortly. "What time is it on your planet?"

"Two-forty-three. I'm sorry, Joe, but I had just had to tell you about that guy, Scott."

"Gwen, I was awake for seventy-two hours straight - I want to sleep!"

"Oh - Okay," Gwen said in a purposefully sorrowful voice. She knew he always gave in to guilt trips.

Joe rolled on his back, put his free hand over his eyes and sighed deeply. "What did Mike find out?"

With enthusiasm filling every word, Gwen sounded like an overly-excited teenager as she spoke.

"Scott Charles is a total choir boy," Gwen stated. "His parents are rich, but apparently very generous. They are constantly giving money to charities and help finance a new library in the city that they live in."

"Think they would donate any money to the Get-Joe-Out-Of-Debt Fund?" Joe asked sarcastically.

Gwen giggled a little and continued.

"I know, I feel the same way! Any way, Scott is the youngest in his family - he's got an older brother and an older sister, and they both had a different father than Scott.

"Scott was the perfect student in high school He played basketball and baseball. Because of the baseball, he was offered a couple of full-ride scholarships to some really nice schools. But he wasn't a dumb jock either. He was valedictorian of his class and homecoming king his senior year."

"Gee - he sounds like Mr. All-American. How did he end up around here? Why isn't he in Harvard?" Joe asked through a yawn.

"I don't know. Mike couldn't really find anything about him after graduation. Except an article about his family mourning the death of some girls he went to school with. She had cancer, I think - I can't remember exactly."

"Well that's pretty sad," Joe said groggily.

"Yeah, I thought so too. But, Scott will turn twenty-one in August, he has no criminal record and is paying his own way for school."

"He sounds like a great guy."

"He does - I want him."

"I thought you were doing all of this for Kiki?" Joe reminded her.

"I am. But I still want him."

"Well, you have Neil."

"That's not the same. I just have sex with Neil."

"We won't discuss that now," Joe said, a hint of his stern tone made it through his yawn.

"Okay," Gwen replied reluctantly.

"So how are you going to get them together?" Joe questioned. "You know Kiki won't let you set her up on another blind date."

"I know," Gwen answered with total confidence. "I already have that planned out."

"You do?"

"Of course."

Joe only grunted as he fought to stay awake.

"You sound tired. You should get some sleep," Gwen said.

"Now why didn't I think of that?" Joe remarked cynically.

"Ha-ha. Go back to sleep," Gwen replied with a small chuckle.

"Gee - Can I? Can I really?" Joe retorted, shifting from cynicism to sarcasm.

"Sweet dreams, Darling," Gwen stated and then hung up. She wasn't going to wait for his next smart remark.

His eyes still unopened, Joe managed to get the receiver back in its cradle. Re roll over and shifted his limbs until he was comfortable. With his face once again buried in the his pillow, Joe quickly fell back to sleep.

Gwen reluctantly settled into her bed. Her mind swirled as it worked out the details of her plan. As simple as it was, Gwen congratulated her own genius.

It was half past noon on an overcast Sunday when Gwen finally rolled out of bed. She took a shower and enjoyed a quick turkey sandwich before putting her plan in motion.

"What are you doing Friday night?"

"Why?" Kiki asked suspiciously.

"I was thinking that maybe, after Josh picks up Jane, we could have a girl's night out," Gwen answered, her tone dripping with innocense.

"Oh really," Kiki replied, still suspicious.

"Yes - Neil is out of town, so I thought maybe you and I could forget about men for a few hours. We'll have dinner, catch a movie, and go dancing. It'll be fun."

Kiki sighed. She knew Gwen well enough to know she was up to something, but she couldn't figure out what. Even through her suspicions, she did think the night out sounded like fun and it would be something different.

"I guess," Kiki answered with a slight note of hesitation.

"Great. I'll drive," Gwen stated before Kiki could protest. "I'll pick you up at eight. Talk to you later."

Kiki did not have a chance to say goodbye before Gwen hung up. Gwen sighed heavily, a feeling of relief sweeping through her. One half of the plan was taken care of, now was the time to finish the job.

Quickly scanning the fax she had gotten from Mike, Gwen searched for a phone number. When she found it, she dialed and then silently waited.

"Hello?"

When she heard his deep voice Gwen had to remind herself that it was all for Kiki's happiness.

"Can I speak to Scott?"

"This is him."

"Hi, Scott, this is Gwen - we met at Charley's."

"Oh - hi," Scott said with a smile in his voice. "How are you?"

"I'm fine," Gwen replied. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply trying to get the nerve to continue. "What are you doing Friday night?"
