I feel it is a sad reminder of what happens when there is a 'majority rule' and this is taken to extremes. Minorities should always be tolerated and included wherever possible within the main stream of society.

This is an incredibly well done and informative site. It astounds me that the governor and national guard were never tried for homicide in relation to this incident. Seeing the pictures in my history texts are sobering enough, my sympathies for those who ere hurt or knew somebody, words cannot accurately describe how disgusting the slaughter was.

To use the Gaurd trained in combat tatics on civil unrest in paramount to a shepard placing a wolf among his flock. It is a tragedy of jus ice that the Govenor or none of the Kent State Administration were not tried for murder / man slaughter in this case.

My husband Craig began his freshman year September of 1970, six months after the shoting. I am writing this on the 29th anniversary of one of the saddest days in my life. There is not enough space or words here to describe how shocked, sad, and outraged I was on that otherwise beautiful Monday afternoon in May 1970. I had been participating n a demonstration against Nixon's expanded war into Cambodia. I came home, turned on the tube at 6 PM and heard the news. That's when the Antiwar movement began to fall apart, when Allison, Jeffrey, Bill, and Sandy were killed. They were exactly my age. I kept thinking that night...it could have been me. The government sent a clear message that day, "Children of America, our right to dissent only goes so far...cross over the line and we will kill you". Since then there has been a constant denouncing of the Sixties by the mainstream media in an attempt to make people forget recent history and to invalidate an entire generation's experiences. As a writer, I've tried to point that out over the last 20 yea s. I know this is a hell of a forum to be saying this, and I hope no one accuses me of disrepect to the four who were murdered, but if you feel the way I do about the Sixties and the Antiwar Movement, read my new book, THE GIANT'S CHAIR. It's a virtual ook, online only at 1stBooks Library www.1stbooks.com Now there is Kosovo. I pray that the boys of my daugher's generation aren't sent off to die in the Balkans. End the madness. STOP THE WAR!

I want to thank you for bringing back to me the memory of a time so far removed. It was a time of "newness", of change, of questions. Of fear, of anger and also of great promise and hope. I remember this time so well, with an idealistic viewpoint, that of the as yet uninitiated... not yet jaded by the harsh realities of our times and lives. So much has happened in my life following those years, good and bad, and I try to explain these events and history now to my children in a way that encourages their own questions, their thoughts and beliefs. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's "Ohio" still now congers up images of that time. And in my mind's eye, I still can remember that now famous photograph that has come to symbolize the events of that day. So much has happened since those days in my life, I can only wonder at what might have been for the lives of the four dead in Ohio. Thanks for taking me back to some of my roots. I need to go there, if just to remember, the hopefulness and idealism of youth, unencumbered by the trials and weariness that bog us down as the years go by. There has not been another "Kent State" so I suppose the loss of life may not have been in vain, but there is Kosovo today, just as there was Viet Name then. Perhaps we have not learned all we needed to from these events. Brian Nichols Thanks again!

The spring of '70 will forever be burned in my consciousness as a time of elation, confusion and tragedy. From the silliness of "Paul is dead" to the despair of May 4th, my second semester sophomore year marks the most emotional period in my life. I see May 4th as a watershed event. Going back to school the next fall, I noticed subtle and not-so-subtle changes. Before May 4th, long hair was a protest; afterwards, style. Before May 4th, smoking marijuana was a statement; afterwards, part of being cool. Before May 4th, most of us cared; afterwards, most of us felt an empty apathy. I went to KSU for graduate school in '74, and was amazed at the rawness of the May 4th wounds, on both sides of the political spectrum. I was blown away by Kent locals who told me, "they should have killed more of 'em." I was in the Kent area for the co troversies surrounding the new gymnasium (built on the practice field); and for the trial of the guardsmen. What has consistently frustrated me is that there seems to be no closure; no resolution. I hope your website helps a little.

To read something of this nature truly saddens me. My sociology professor, at Sam Houston State Univertiy in Huntsville, Tx, brought it to my attention that many events like this are left neglected when teaching U.S. History. I had never even heard of Kent State until he mentioned it for an extra credit p oject. When he asked if anyone in the class knew of it, few raised their hand. But the ones that did were growing up at the time so they hold that memory in the minds, for they lived it. The others, like me, were ignorant to the matter and lacked the know edge one learns from reading into a historic milestone in American History as the Kent State University Massacres of 1970. These people were students just like me, doing what they had the right to do-that thought is frightening. Hopefully America has lear ed from history not to repeat itself. Good job and keep history alive as you are doing. Be proud of your site. A.R.

I found my way to this site by way of the Crosby Stills and Nash Website Guestbook. I have done a lot of reading about the events in Kent Ohio after Nixon invaded Cambodia, and the shootings at KSU. I've concluded that the real tragedy was the aftermath No one was held liable especially Gov. Rhodes. Nixon, Agnew and Atty. General Mitchel ignored the pleas of hundreds of professors around the country for federal involvement. In the late 70's the university built a gym on the land where our brothers an sisters fought and died. It seems that a culture or its beliefs can be destroyed or discredited by acts like the building of the gym. I visited KSU in 1989 and like visiting any historical site, it made everything seem less abstract and more real. Like many visitors to this site, I have read many of the books published including Michner. I think the book by Peter Davies is better. It was written in 1973 (I believe). One final thought: I wonder if the bombing of the Army Math Research Center (AMRC) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in which one person died would have occured as it did two months later if May 4 never happened. E-mail me anyone would like to know more about AMRC.

I think I was in grade 8 when I read Kent State by James A Michener (an incredibly indepth account of what happened from the Friday 1st to Monday the 4th, I know I didn't appreciate it's significance as much as I do now that I'm graduating University. Wh t brings this tragedy home is that Kent State could be my campus, my city. The students who were killed were not radicals, some were on their way to classes! I think the large majority of the population has forgotten the events that unfolded May 4th, whi h is truly unfortunate. You would think that ALL Universities across North America would organize memorials on that day to remember those who died. Otherwise, I would seriously recommend to anyone who hasn't read the aforementioned book, pick it up at your local library, it's a read you Thanx for your effort in establishing this site, it's great!

I was interested in what you had to say on this web page. It was very touching to me. I say a movie about this tragic story in my history class at Bath County High School. I am currently a Junior at BCHS. After seeing the movie I was interested in seeing if there was something on the web about it. With what I saw I would like to thank Kent State for making a Memorial for everyone else to remember the students thtat were killed and wounded in the shooting of May 4,1970. I would like to say to these students if they were alive today that they did a good job of showing how they felt about people fighting a war that was an undeclared war and getting killed in this war. I fell sorry that they had to lose thier lives at such a young age by the National Gaurd for no reason. So if I was around on May 4,1970 I would have blamed the National Guard for what they did not for what the students were doing because all the students were doing was having a peaceful protest and the fact that the National Gaurd back in the year 1970 had the nerve to open fire upon unarmed students in my eyes is a sin and they should have gotten punished for what they had done. In God's eyes that was a sin aswell and since the people of the National Gaurd didn't get punished by the U.S. Sepreme Court- then when they die they will be tried by God for what they had done while they were on Earth to see weather or not they will "go to Heaven or to Hell." I was very deeply moved by this web site and I would like to say that this web site should remain open for your children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren, Ect.................... and the list goes on and on to see what happened in the past and they may even be able to do a report on it and give it to their history teachers as xtra credit or as a prodject. Thank you for your time and consideration to have a web site like this one.

Thank you for your commendations regarding my research and book, Mayday: Kent State. The next generation must continue my generation's quest for truth on this matter. I am revising my book and also planning a 30th year conference on the Kent State incide t. Those interested should email me to be a part of this memorable event. On the 25th anniversary, we had Mary Vechio and John Filo meet for the first time in 25 years. Mary was the young woman over the body of Jeff Miller in the famous picture that won John Filo, then a student at Kent State, a Pulitzer Prize. They had never before met. I also wrote Mary into the script of Kent State: A Requiem which I wrote as a play and which has been performed at over 100 colleges and other sites. Mary was featured in this play in Boston and also at Kent State in l995. Kudos to this wonderful web site and the young man who continues to keep the flame of justice burning brightly for those interested in the Constitutional rights of the U.S. and the victims of Kent State. Now as an adult and having had my bubble of trust in the United States government popped many times, I have been seeking knowledge of this very tragic incident. I suppose the biggest reason was I attended college late in life (34) and until that time real y did not relate to or think much about what happened on that fateful day. I am totally abhorred that United States citizens, especially students could be fired upon by other citizens of this troubled nation. I thank you for having this site here. We as a ericans need to understand that our rights are something that much blood has been spilled for. We must never forget what transpired on May 4, 1970. NEVER! Thanks.

August 4th 1998, my buddy and I had just gone to a Jimmy Buffet concert in Columbus and were headed back to Ottawa Canada. We both felt we had to stop at Kent State to see where it had all happened. I can't describe the feeling I had standing on that hill It was like experiencing a piece of history. People say the 60's reached there zenith at Woodstock and ended at Altimont. They are wrong. The 60's (and I am not commenting here on wether or not the ideals that constituted them were real or manufactured) nded at Kent State when kids everywhere realized that those in power would never listen. It is sad to know that 4 kid's had to die, but at least some people learned that the way to change things was by changing what things we could ourselves and not to wa t for the bureaucrats to do it for us. They don't listen.

They just had a drunken riot there on 5/3 at about 2 a.m. The National Guard was eventually called in, but not before 23 cops were seriously injured. Great Page! Sad ... I think we have come a long way since those days, but we must always remember these issues. History teaches only if we listen. I am very surprised at the number of people in the Guest Book who weren't born at the time; that they wou d show an interest. May the victims rest in peace ... God Bless America.

I was a freshman then caught up, like many, in the swirl of the times. It is difficult to describe the past under any circumstances, but many who were there seem to be haunted by the shootings. I am a junior at Hutchinson High school and I think that this page is very well done, and it contains the truth to what happened. I feel very badly that our contry would resort to something as low as to kill harmless teenagers that were unarmed. All they were doing was expressing there anger towards a contry that was going to war for a very selfish reseason. I would also like to send deep felt sorrow and best wishes to the families of the victims. Love DARCY

I heard Gram Nash, being interviewed on a local radio station, bring up Kent State 1970. A peaceful demo gone wrong. Somehow I related that gov. action back then, to our poor example of a role model living in the White House. I'll have to think about this for a while. What do we tell our children. The turth of course. Sad, huh.

Interesting. My dorm was Johnson Hall at the time and like numerous others I was just an on-looker. The one thing I remember is the anger I felt after the shootings. I cannot remember the prof's name, but if it had not been for him talking to a number of s on the hill after the shootings, I think a lot more deaths or injuries may have resulted. Good job and continue so we do not forget what lead to this tragic event.
