On February 10th Ali Ahmed from UCLA's Muslim Students Association (MSA) came to speak to our club about Islam (the religion of Muslims). MSA is a student organization found in most universities around the country. The purpose is to promote Islamic Awareness.
Ali Ahmed dispelled many of the misconceptions members of our club had about the religion of Islam.
Below is a short article written by Mark Dizon, a member of the Cultural Awareness Club regarding Ali Ahmed's visit to our club:
On Monday, a represanative of the Islamic faith came to La Salle to enlighten us on the Muslim religion. His name was Ali Ahmed and he was a student at UCLA. Charismatically, he started off by giving us little tidbits of information about Islam. One was Ramadan, which is a month of fasting for Muslims in which they do not eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset. He also taught us the origins and meanings associated with the religion of Islam. Salam meaning peace, tasleem means to submit and Islam means one who submits. Later on, he clarified any misconceptions that anyone had about his faith, from such things as all Muslims are terrorists and "camel jockeys". He also explained that the Nation of Islam, is just a small group which copies some of Islam's theologies but Muslims consider the Nation of Islam a blasphemes religion. All in all, it was interesting because Ali kept the club interested. They way he spoke was very enthusiastic and it was obvious that he was having a good time talking to us and sharing his knowledge. Everyone had a good time and I wouldn't be surprised if he was asked to come back again for another session.
