In statements, the conjugated verb normally is the second idea in the sentence.
1.The subject may precede it, as in English, or
2.some other component which normally follows the verb may precede
it, in which case the subject immediately follows the conjugated
verb.
1) Das Wetter ist heute kalt.
2) Heute ist das Wetter kalt.
A coordinating conjunction connects two independent clauses. Both clauses use the word order they would have as independent sentences.
The coordinating conjunctions in German are:
aber - but, nevertheless
denn - for, because
oder - or
sondern - but rather
und - and
Sie geht in die Bibliothek, aber sie bleibt nicht lange.
Arbeiten Sie heute abend, oder gehen Sie ins Kino?
Ich gehe nicht ins Kino, sondern ich bleibe zu Hause.
A subordinating conjunction introduces a dependent clause, which uses dependent word order.
