Improving your French Vocabulary
if you want some handy essay phrases now - click here. Otherwise, you should try to avoid les mots passe-partout, ie. the boring, vague GCSE type words. For example:
Nouns
chose
personne
homme/femme
gens
Verbs
faire
être
avoir
dire
aller
Adjectives
important
fort
spécial
bon
Quantifiers
beaucoup de
peu de
Instead try using some of the following words and phrases:
1. une chose: un objet, un appareil, un élément,
une activité, un article, etc...
2. une personne: un individu, un Français moyen,
un électeur, un salarié, etc...
3. les gens: le public, les téléspectateurs,
la population, les Français, l'opinion, etc...
4. faire: accomplir, effectuer, se livrer à, réaliser,
pratiquer, etc...
5. être: constituer, représenter, correspondre
à, s'identifier à, etc...
6. avoir: comporter, détenir, posséder, présenter,
etc...
7. dire: déclarer, affirmer, répliquer, annoncer,
etc...
8. aller: se rendre, se déplacer, transiter, etc...
9. important: crucial, central, indispensable, signifiant,
notable, à retenir, etc...
10. fort: imposant, puissant, inébranlable, affirmé,
prononcé, etc...
11. spécial: hors du commun, exceptionnel, insolite,
remarquable, etc...
12. bon: de qualité, valable, solide, etc...
13. beaucoup de: (un grand) nombre de, la plus grande partie
de, une majorité de, énormément de, etc...
14. peu de: un petit nombre de, une minorité de,
une poignée de, presque aucun, etc...
Remember that not all of the above are synonyms, ie. not all are interchangeable in every case; it is important to check exact meanings in a dictionary to make sure that the word/phrase is appropriate in the context in which you wish to use it.
Remember to check the following once you finish:
* correct tense
* correct auxiliary verb, avoir or être
* agreements in number (plural) and gender (feminine) with
verbs taking être
* agreements in number (plural) and gender (feminine) of adjectives
with nouns
