EXERCISES will be set after each lesson and in addition there will be either an ESSAY or LETTER or an ORAL PRESENTATION to be prepared at the end of each unit. These essays and talks must be saved and reworked, where appropriate into your coursework
ESSAYS and ORAL PRESENTATIONS must be between 200 and 250 words, LETTERS must be between 100 and 150 words and COURSEWORK pieces should be between 600 and 700 words in length. For AS you will be required to present and discuss a topic for 15 minutes in the ORAL EXAM in the Spring term of 2003. For A2 you will be required to discuss three topics. In addition for A2 you will write 1 piece of COURSEWORK by the end of the first half term in Autumn 2004 and 1 piece by the end of term Christmas 2004.
Your main task will be to build up your VOCABULARY rapidly to the required standard, as you will not have access to s dictionary in the exams. You will be shown strategies for this. A short piece of DAILY reading in German is essential as is REGULAR exposure to German Radio and TV. A selection of magazines, newspapers, videos and listening materials are available in the German Resources Room and in the Library and you must use private study time to do some viewing and listening in the Resources room or Library.
When reading or watching TV ALWAYS note down essential phrases, which you could build into and essay or discussion and in addition to listing key words, work them into a sentence. You will need an EFFICIENT filing system.
In the first 2 terms you will be introduced to the AS topics but we will try to work in a selection of A2 topics, so that you have some basis for your choice of AS oral material and A2 Coursework. You will also complete a thorough review of the essential GRAMMAR and will work at Use of Language exercises linked to the current topic. In addition you will be introduced to a variety of extracts from German LITERATURE linked to the topic you are currently studying.
Before you reach the Upper Sixth you will make an individual choice of topics for detailed study. You will have to gather your research materials or read the set books if you choose a literary topic DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS and so you see that you will need to have developed the skills to be able to work independently. This is an exciting course and we hope that you will derive much enjoyment from it. However, the more spadework you put in initially, the more your language will take off!
