Grammar

UPPER AND LOWER 6
GRAMMAR AND USE OF LANGUAGE

LOWER 6 - GRAMMAR

There must be a thorough revision of Basic Grammar and then the introduction of more advanced material eg passive, subjunctive. Please follow Aktion Grammatik and use its exercises.

In addition all students will be issued with Alles Klar and Kernpunkte for easy reference.

The need for grammatical accuracy will be most evident in the oral exam. There will be a multiple choice grammar cloze test in unit 3.

UPPER 6 - GRAMMAR

Before the completion of the first piece of COURSEWORK there must be URGENT revision in the first 6 weeks of:

the passive
the subjunctive / reported speech / the conditional
word order and advanced sentence structure
the case system
adjective endings

In the next 6 weeks a revision of last year's scheme can be undertaken tailored to the particular needs of individual students.

In the remainder of the year:

USE OF LANGUAGE (UNIT 2 only)
There must be regular practice of use of language type exercises: synonyms, re-writing of sentences (eg participial phrases into relative clauses) and in addition to Aktion Grammatik and Neue Perspektiven, past papers and the old Oxford Entrance papers are most useful.

OTHER EXAM SKILLS
A great deal of practice of the final question of UNITS ONE and TWO is essential ie passages from summarised in German and own comments added. For the Fax question in UNIT ONE key business phrases are to be covered and short directed writing tasks from English into German may be set. See past papers.
