Stay Awhile

(c) Copywrited Diana Corpus Garza
Written November 13, 1996

Welcome Dear Father,
into our hearts and minds.
Stay awhile, heal our wounds,
self-inflicted misconceptions.
Lift our souls that we may catch a glimpse of
Your reflection.
Remind us that we come here not to tell
each other who to be,
but to tell ourselves what we have become.
And in that faith sharing moment,
help us hear how You came into our hearts to
create the miracle of change.
And when all have spoken their moment of God,
until the call of daily life and distraction
takes us away from You,
fill us with light and stay awhile,
Confirming once again that You are always with us.

This poem I wrote after visiting a new bookstore/coffee shop named The Millennium in McAllen, Texas. I was inspired by the many brave souls that shared their poetry and stories. I can honestly say I began to write again after this experience. The Millennium is owned by a wonderful young man, Noe Hinojosa, Jr. He also has a wonderful newspaper called the "Mesquite Review". It gives you a wide vision of the art culture in McAllen. You can write him at [email protected] for more information on the "Mesquite Review". Alas, the Millennium closed down but the newspaper continues. Anyway, this poem is dedicated to Noe Hinojosa and the Millennium now, Resotto's.

STANDING AT THE MILLENIUM

by Diana Corpus Garza

Bold black letters,
Straight and narrow,
Spread across a prickly white,
Spelling out MILLENNIUM.

My soul stood still,
as a chord was struck,
a door opened to a room
closed long ago.

Sweet music, loud words,
sweet caresses from open wounds.
My soul cried out to spew her
contents.

Tears, seasoned and salty,
pouring out through rose colored glasses
long ago dimmed by
unintended cruelty.

You're at the MILLENNIUM,
Starbright and hopeful.
Maybe this time,
we'll get it right.

The Box Inside
(c)Diana Corpus Garza (March 19, 2006)

I want to step outside the box,
soar above the skies,
fly past twinkling stars and visit with the moon.
Cast off past indiscretions, embrace new directions, past bars of self-made prisms,
Shed old skins, like faked rainbow stripes,
Kiss the sweet effervescence of new beginnings.
Alas, the mass layered baggage, too heavy to cut away keeps the box inside the box inside, inside the box.

I, Vampire of the Light by Diana Corpus Garza

I, Vampire of the light,
see you hiding in the night.
No need to hide, I recognize you,
With those piercing eyes, inviting lips,
hands that burn upon the touch.
Your body heaves, every inch a sin.
But do not hesitate, I will redeem you.
Your eyes look away,
Is my light so bright?
What have you to fear?
You are a moth searching for a flame to consume you.
Do not flitter about
Come and take me, I have enough light to spare,
I will bathe you in the light,
Fill every darkened corner,
Bring confusion to an end,
Allow you to restfor a while.
But I will tell you this,
You will crave me,
Desire me and I WILL walk away
And leave you
Forever touched
Forever changed
Forever alone
I, Vampire of the light,
And you will know it

I Always Knew I Could Fly

Wings of Reality

By Diana Corpus Garza

Things I could only imagine
Have now come true,
You know, those dreams of childhood,
Dreams you knew since infancy,

Tacked down by the drumming voice of someone telling you no,
Telling the dreams deep within your soul to stand down,
Until an ache is born
then festers like an unattended wound.

It never goes away,
It waits, in silent dreams.
Behind your eyes, in the corner of your mind,
tormenting your soul like a vice.

Squeezing, twisting, torturing pang
Buried deep, waiting silently,
An ache that doesnt let go,
trapped wings unfurled,

And you rush about,
Doing and saying,
Working and praying,
drowning out the thought.

But the small still voice,
Whispers to you,
Im your daily companion,
Im closer than you think.

So you begin to believe,
One step at a time,
You stop and ask
What have I left undone?

What dream did I leave untouched?
What key did I leave to rust?
You rush about to find the door,
Locked and hidden deep inside your core.

And find tucked beneath one arm.
the secret, silent dream
slowly come to life.
So I lift and stretch and stretch and reach.

One deep breath unfurls one wing
I prod and pick, bend and twist,
testing my confidence,
Surprised the wing does not break.

I turn and feel for the second wing,
More hidden than the first
Hurt and wounded from denial.
But the pain is not so hard,

Truth and grit,
More effort then pain,
I fight to extend its length
building up slowly, quietly, its own mighty strength.

And here I stand magnificently.
My wings spread before you.
Wiggling to take the first leap
of grace and at its own pace.

I do it so you can be a witness,
To my own human struggle,
Because deep in side...

I always knew I could fly.

This next poem was inspired by my sister, Velma Cruz. This poem is written in spanish but I have provided a translated version right behind it for my non-spanish speaking friends. This is dedicated to my sister whom I love very, very much.

Soy Mujer

by Diana Corpus Garza

Soy una mujer que habla no nomas por hablar,
Soy una mujer que habla para que me escuchen,
No me patronises,
Ni tus carrisias quiero ver,
Mejor dame to respeto,
Yo tambien puedo ser,
No nomas soy un cuerpo,
Botado despues de usar,
Soy una alma distincta, bella, y fiel,
Tengo secretos poderosos.
Intensiones sinceros,
Amor que regalar,
Todo por el presio
de escuchar.

Here goes folks...this is not entirely accurate so bear with me.

I AM WOMAN

by Diana Corpus Garza

I am a woman that speaks not just to speak,
I am a woman that speaks so I may be listened to.
Do not patronize me,
Nor your sweet caresses do I want to see,
Instead give me your respect,
I too can be,
I am not just a body,
Thrown away after being used,
I am a soul distinct, beautiful, and faithful.
I have powerful secrets.
Sincere intentions,
Love to give,
All for the price
of being listened to.
