Welcome to my DURLAND Family History page. I will try to include my family pedigree through the WOOD/DURLAND line back through Orange County NY, Oyster Bay area of Long Island, New Amsterdam, and back to the medieval Netherlands area. The following is our direct DURLAND Family line. Click on the names of wives to follow the maternal/spousal lines, or select from the list above. (Please be patient while I build these links!) Cornelius VanNess WOOD was named after his father's uncle, Cornelius VanNESS, 1st husband of his Aunt Alice. "Van" attended Andover Academy in Andover, MA and Yale University, where he majored in history. After a post-graduation tour of Europe, he became active in Republican reform politics in the Third Ward, Yonkers, NY. He met his wife in the hospital (where she was working as a nutritionist) after a New Year's touch football injury. They were engaged in March and married in June of the same year. After their marriage, he worked as a real estate agent in Yonkers until receiving the financing to develop Cross County Shopping Center, when he started Eastern Shopping Centers, Inc. Through this company, he developed many early shopping centers including Vestal Plaza near Binghamton, NY and Prince George's Plaza in MD. The family moved from Yonkers to a large "old" house in the Edgemont area of Greenburgh, Westchester County, NY before 1950. The children attended school in the Edgemont School system. They lived in Edgemont until Van & Dorothy retired to their 150-acre tree farm in Middlebury, VT (purchased & used as a vacation home 1957-1966) in 1966, following his first coronary. They both died there. Van's funeral was held at the Scarsdale Community Baptist Church in Westchester County, NY, where the family had attended from the late 1940's to 1966. He was buried at Woodlawn in his parents' family plot. Dorothy's ashes are buried in one of her flower gardens near the house in Middlebury, VT.

Children of Harry & Henrietta WOOD:
1. Cornelius VanNess WOOD b. 9 Mar 1902 (see above)
2. Wesley Fraser WOOD (never married; no children)

Harry WOOD was a stenographer for the New York State Supreme Court. He moved to NYC from Orange County to work sometime about the 1890s, where he met Henrietta FRASER. He was still a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Deerpark (Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY) at the time of his marriage in 1898, since their December issue of "Church News" in that year carries an announcement of his wedding, describing him as a member and including the comment that he had at one time attended their "Sabbath School" for 10 years without missing a session! Harry & Henrietta lived in rented property in NYC until moving to 1 Delevan Terrace in Yonkers, NY in the early 1900s, where they raised two sons, Van and Wesley, and became prominent enough in the local "society" for their activities to be noted in the local newspaper columns. They lived mostly in Yonkers, with temporary residences (summers?) in other NY and New England locations, including Manchester, VT to get the children away from an epidemic in NYC (yellow fever?). They also traveled extensively, especially on fishing trips to Colorado and to Middle Dam, Maine. Pictures and notices of this family are in a leather scrapbook kept by Henrietta (FRASER) WOOD and now at the WOOD family farm in Middlebury, Vermont. Later, they retired to Dunedin, FL, where both Harry & Henrietta died. They are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
parents of Harry Wesley WOOD:

b. 1 Jan 1840 Orange Co., NY
d. 10 Dec 1914 Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY

     Annie Belle TAYLOR
     (parents unknown at this time)
     b. 14 Jul 1847 Mt. Hope, Orange Co., NY
     d. 11 Jan 1919 Orange Co., NY

Oliver's father died young and the children ended up living with various relatives. Oliver went to live with his mother's brother, Oliver E. WOOD. From that time, he used the surname WOOD.
Children of Oliver & Annie WOOD:
1. Claryssa Jane b. 6 Mar 1869; m. Stephen MOORE - 2 children
2. Harry Wesley b. 5 Aug 1870 (see above)
3. Alice b. 12 Oct 1872; m .(1) Cornelius Henry VanNESS (no children)

4. Josephine b. 16 Mar 1875; m. Charles Solomon COTTON - 2 children

Oliver is listed as a farmer in Waywayanda, Orange Co., NY in the 1870 census; as a "fruit dealer" at 4 Main Street, Port Jervis, NY in 1880. In 1900 he was living at 14 Ferguson Street in Port Jervis, and listed as a "landlord". He was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Orange Co., NY.

2. John H. b. abt. 1838; moved to Sullivan County
3. Oliver b. 1 Jan 1840 (see above)
4. David G. b. abt. 1844

Henry DURLAND apparently died while his children were young, and his widow apparently was not able to take care of them by herself. In the 1850 census, she is living with her brother, Lewis C. WOOD as Jane DURLAND with 2 of her children, daughter Mary E[lizabeth] DURLAND age 15 yrs and son David G. DURLAND age 6 years. In the 1860 census, Jane DURLAND is listed with her son-in-law Oscar MILLS & his wife, her daughter, Mary E. MILLS (age 24 yrs.). Her youngest child David G. is listed both with her (MILLS family) & with Lewis C. WOOD (who had married in the meantime), John H. DURLAND is listed with his paternal uncle (probably his godfather), John H. DURLAND, and Oliver is listed with his maternal uncle, Oliver E. WOOD. The 1860 census lists 3 children under Oliver E. & Martha (KIRBY)WOOD: Clarissa J[ane] age 28 years, Charles D., age 26 years, and Oliver, age 20 years. Clarissa & Charles D. were children of Oliver E. & Martha (KIRBY) WOOD, and Oliver was their nephew. Oliver E. WOOD is still living with his nephew/adoped son, Oliver DURLAND WOOD in the 1870 census in Waywayanda, this time under the younger Oliver's family. At that time, Oliver E. WOOD was 65 years old.

Charles was a scout in the French and Indian War. Afterwards, he married Jane and settled in Orange County. He was an "exempt" in the American Revolution (because of his age). Most of the Orange County NY DURLANDs are his descendants.
