Text book VS Comics

1. Text book is associated with the image of examination : One 8 year old boy says -"Text book is for examination purpose but comics are for entertainment ".

2. Absence of dialogue: The same boy says - "Comics include dialogue, but where is dialogue in text book?"

3. No repeated reading : The boy says - "Well, I have to read the lessons of text book repeatedly as you may ask me questions. But this may not happen in case of comics ".

4. Rigidity : pkierst says : "The basic fomat of learning material has not kept up with the changing world".

5. Scope for creativity :pkierst says : "I've found also that the children like and respond to reading and writting in a comic book format. ..............They seem to get alot of fun out of this creating thier own stories ".eneidamolina identified problem of creativity and wrote a beautiful poem

6.Self identification : Ishani73 wrote " children may identify   themselves more with the characters.Text books, on the other hand, seem to be boring to the children   because they can not hold the attention of the children for a considerable period of time "

7.Survey result : Queenou wrote -" I took a quick survey of some of the children in our program and they responded with their reasons   for enjoying comics. Their reasons were:
   1) Funny
   2) Lots of action
   3) Colorful
   4) Collector's items
   5) Bubbles for text
   6) Easily carried
   7) Inexpensive
   8) Easy to read

8. Visualizing the text :Queenou wrote "visualizing text is work. When each action is illustrated, then the reader accepts the artist's rendition of the scene with no personal involvement--much like watching television or playing video games. There are no blanks to fill in............An active imagination is one of the keys to enjoyable reading and creative thinking.

Text book VS Electronic media

 1. Intearacting role of electronic media : popcklgal wrote - "I feel that children are so much smarter than we ever were at their age. The world is moving at a very high speed and it is up to us to keep up with the pace. We have to keep up with the children and what it takes to motivate them to learn. Children love interaction, their world revoles around it.Computers in class rooms, using them to read ".

2. Repeated feedback : dduttaroy wrote "We usually say that this motivation is due to interactive role of electronic media. I want to go more deeply. I am thinking that what the child gets through such interaction. Each child is searching of his own identity. Repeated feedback about his performance in game through scores may help him to find some environment where in he can understand who is he. I am thinking on this line as I have seen that my child likes those games which provide him scores and he does not like those interactive games where in he does not find any score. This motivation may be due to his in search of self-identity ".

Flowers are Red
   by Harry Chapin

The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
And the teacher said.. What you doin' young man
   I'm paintin' flowers he said
She said... It's not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red

There's a time for everything young man
And a way it should be done
You've got to show concern for everyone else
For you're not the only one

   And she said...
   Flowers are red young man
   Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen
   But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one

Well the teacher said.. You're sassy
There's ways that things should be
And you'll paint flowers the way they are
   So repeat after me.....

   And she said...
   Flowers are red young man
   Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen

   But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one

The teacher put him in a corner
She said.. It's for your own good..
And you won't come out 'til you get it right
And all responding like you should
   Well finally he got lonely
   Frightened thoughts filled his head
And he went up to the teacher
And this is what he said.. and he said

Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen

Time went by like it always does
And they moved to another town
And the little boy went to another school
And this is what he found
   The teacher there was smilin'
   She said...Painting should be fun
And there are so many colors in a flower
   So let's use every one

But that little boy painted flowers
In neat rows of green and red
And when the teacher asked him why
This is what he said.. and he said

Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen.
