READING MOTIVATION

Dr. D. Dutta Roy, Ph.D.

1. What is reading ?

Reading is the process of deriving meaning from the print. It is the mental interpretation of written symbols.

2. How does it help ?

Reading increases one's current information and helps in mixing with different communities. Reading improves one's memorizing and comprehending abilities. It reduces loneliness.

3. Does young child dislike reading ?

Child dislikes reading when he/she considers reading as work but play.

4. Does punishment help ?

Most young children are coerced, controlled and threatened with punishment to get them to reading. This lacks one's motivation to read.
So do not punish him rather motivate him to read by using his imagination, interest, creativity and self concept.

5. Is there any sex difference in reading motivation ?

Age for age, girls read more than boys. Girls are more proficient in reading and as a result, read with less effort than boys.

6. Is there any demographic difference in reading ?

Children from the more favored socio-economic group spend more time in reading than those from the less favourd groups. Bright children at all ages, read more than those of lower intellectual levels.

7. Which books be given to my young child ?

If your young child is less than 8 years old, give him small books which he can handle easily. He may like large, brightly colored pictures of people, animals and familiar household articles. There will be a minimum of reading matter, preferably in large print which he can see easily without eye strain. Reading matters must be simple, understandable, words, and short sentences dealing with people, animals, objects, or situations that are familiar to him. Give him the story books with happy endings.
