Hawthorn trees used to be thought of as "witches" who had transformed themselves. It is one of the traditional trees used to perform rituals and dance under. Hawthorn wood, carved into a charm or placed in to a gris-gris, is used to increase fertility. The leaves are used to promote chastity by placing them either under the bed, or between the mattresses. If the leaves or wood are carried when fishing, it will insure a good catch. The wood carried prevents lightening from striking you, promotes happiness, and lends protection from danger. Hawthorn trees are said to be sacred to the faeries, and if planted in your yard or garden, brings their blessings to you. If you find three trees growing together, it is said to be a portal to the other realm. A cradle carved of hawthorn protects the child in it from harm and evil spells.

The nuts from this tree can be eaten to increase fertility, or added to spells and gris-gris for this reason, as well as for luck and prosperity. Eaten, the nuts also give wisdom. If you make a crown with hazel twigs and place it on your head while wishing, it may come true. If the twigs are placed in window sills or door frames, it is supposed to protect the house from lightening strikes. Hazel wood is used to make all-purpose wands and dowsing rods. To protect yourself while outside, draw a circle around yourself with a hazel stick, in the dirt. The nuts can also be eaten prior to trying divination.

To attract money, carry the root that you have annointed with mint oil on you in a green gris-gris. To bring love, success, and happiness, you can carry it on you, also. Grind it into a powder to use in mixtures, incense, and magickal powders for protection, gambling luck, and to break curses or hexes. You can also place some in your basement, attic, windows, and doors to prevent evil or negativity from entering. You can also use the root to make an annointing oil by cutting into it in several places and soaking it in vegetable, mineral, almond, or olive oil for several days or weeks. Leave the root in the bottle. You should use a glass bottle only, as plastic has a tendenvy to draw and absorb the essence of the herbs away from the oil.
