Expose and Oppose the Imperialist Shadow Game!

By Zapata from #Socialism

Right now the Canadian, US, and Australian governments, among others, are paving the way for an armed peacekeeping force to enter and "stabilize" East Timor. Most people are convinced that this is a genuine effort to save the lives of the East Timorese against a brutal genocidal regime. However, upon deeper inspection, this can be seen for what it really is: An imperialist attempt to secure their interests under the guise of peace and democracy.

The powers who plan to intervene in Indonesia care absolutley nothing about the East Timorese, nor the Indonesian people. In fact, they have been complicit in the murder of Indonesians for quite some time. In 1965, the U.S. supported the rise to power of a military regime that killed one million people in Indonesia. In 1975, the Western Imperialists supported Indonesia’s invasion of East Timor, and the subsequent genocide unleashed there. The US even went as far to advise the Indonesian regime on how best to carry out the invasion. Even when the Indonesian government was in the process of murdering one third of the population of East Timor, these governments said nothing, nor did they impose sanctions, in fact many responded with military aid to Indonesia. So are we now to expect that these countries - who have quite literally put the gun in the hand of the Indonesian butchers – are now going to save these people?

By carrying out their violent rampage through the army and the militias supported by the army, Indonesia, led by B.J. Habibie, is sending a brutal message to the many peoples and nationalities of the country: resistance will be met with violence. Is it wrong to suggest that the military is out of control, and therefore must be placed under control by western powers. Their actions have been in the works for some time, ever since it was announced that there would be a referendum in East Timor on sovereignty. Australia has known about these plans, and is highly probable that the US and Canada have known about them as well.

The imperialists are now executing a phase of their well planned "shadow game". Now that the Indonesian government has completed their goals and are ready to withdraw, the imperialists are moving in to secure the area and prevent further unrest. The fact is, Indonesia is very weak right now. Anti-government protests are rocking the state. The imperialists are in a postion to spend a great deal to defend the rotten state of Indonesia because it is an important ally in South East Asia, and serves as a crucial labour pool to their industry. This intervention gives them the oppurtunity they need to secure and stabilize all of Indonesia for their interests.

We cannot depend on the UN to represent the people of the world, it represents only the governments of the world. Worse, the most crucial aspects of the UN are handled by the biggest western imperialist powers. When we see the UN, we must read the imperialists.

The actions of the UN have nothing to do with peace, but they do have everything to do with continuing the opression and exploitation of the East Timorese and the Indonesian people.
