The THOMAS COLES COLLECTION
TILLEY, Robert
[xx/xx/1863?-04/13/1948]

The Fisherman's Advocate

April 30, 1948.

The funeral of the late Robert Tilley took place on Thursday last, April 15th.
Deceased had reached the advanced age of 85 years. Although until recently able to
be around as usual his health had failed during the past year and since early winter
he was confined to his room. The end came rather suddenly following an acute attack on
the morning of April 13th. For many years actively identified with the business of the
place, he was admired and highly respected by all fellow citizens. His passing removes
another of the the very few remaining of his day and generation and a contact which
linked the records of a hundred years ago. His parents came here from Open Hall, B.B.,
over 90 years ago - his father entering into business but passing away at an early age
of 47. The name of Robert Tilley will be long remembered in connection with the various
phases of life of this community.

Surviving are wife, five sons and five daughters, to whom we extend our sincere
sympathy.

Messrs Thomas Tilley and Rex Tilley who arrived by Thursday's train to attend the
funeral of their father returned to St. John's and Gander on Friday and Saturday.

1948 OBITUARY Robert Tilley (Elliston) "Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me; And may there be no moaning at the bar, when I put out to sea." On the evening of April 13th one of our eldest and highly respected citizens in the person of Mr. Robert Tilley entered into rest. Notwithstanding his advanced years he was admirably active throughout the past year and only during the last four months was he really confined to his home. His failing became more noticeable during past weeks and while not surprising the end came rather unexpectedly. Born at Elliston (then Bird Island Cove) on January 11th 1863, the younger of the family of the late Robert and Catherine (Newhook) Tilly deceased received his education at the Catalina public school, returning to his home where he occupied himself with the general business of the place at which occupation he spent the greater part of his life, being associated with the late Fred F. Hubley, his brother the late Arthur Tilley, and later for many years in charge of the business of the late Philip Templeman at Elliston. Following the conclusion of the latter firm's activities here he entered the business of his son, Clarence from which he retired some years ago. His wide experience and service in the business life of the community brought him into contact with more people than perhaps any other person of his day. His was the knowledge of many difficult situations throughout those years, during which he endeared himself to everyone by his cheerfulness, encouragement and all assistance in his power. The name of Robert Tilly was ever a familiar one, admired, respected and long to be remembered. An ardent lover of nature and its wonders, with fishing and gardening perhaps appealing most to him and which he diligently occupied himself with as long as health and strength permitted. His passing severs yet another link with the long past and closes the family record opened a century or more ago. Surviving are his wife; five sons, Thomas at St. John's, Clarence, Max and Arthur at Elliston, and Rex at Gander; five daughters, Nora (Mrs R. C. Clouter, Elliston), Hilda (Mrs. N. C. Crewe, St. John's) Nellie (Mrs. M. Frazee, USA), Catherine (Mrs. F. Thistle, Corner Brook), and Sophie at home, together with a large number of grandchildren. Funeral took place on Thursday 15th, from his late home attended by a large concourse of citizens. Service was conducted by Rev. L. Norman, R. D., and internment beneath the shadow of the village Church within the circle where rest the beloved members of the family and in the centre of which strands the parent monument of 75 years ago. To the widow and family deepest sympathy of the community is extended.
