Former Teacher, World War 1 Veteran Passes Peacefully after Ill 2 Months

Elliston's most respected and best loved resident, Clare Tilley, passed away peacefully
early this morning after an illness of about two months. He was in his 55th year.

Mr Tilley, who in 30 years built up one of the largest trading firms on the Bonavista
Peninsula and who last year saw realised the building of the peninsula's most modern
departmental store, was born in Elliston on March 10, 1898, the son of Robert and Emily
Jane Tilley.

After graduating from the United Church School, Elliston, Mr. Tilley taught school at
Maverley for a few years before proceeding to Bishop Field's College for further study.
While there in 1917 he volunteered for duty with the First Newfoundland Regiment overseas,
and served as a signaller until the end of Word War I.

Shortly after he returned home in 1919, he began teaching at Catalina, a post he held
for three years until he resigned to enter business.

					Starts Own Firm

He started a firm under his own name in September, 1922, and, through skillfu; management
was able to continue operations during the dark days of the 1930s. During the Second World
War he was able to build up his firm, C. Tilley Ltd., to its present high position. As a
retailer and wholesaler, the firm is the largest in Elliston and rivals others in
Newfoundland.

A new modern departmental store at Elliston was built under his management last year. The
two-storey structure is one of the landmarks of the community. It was opened for business
early last fall.

Mr. Tilley married Jane Porter of Elliston in early 1929 and besides his widow is
survived by three sons, Gerald, Roy and Douglas, and two daughters, Shirley and Audrey,
all of Elliston.

Among other survivors are his mother at Elliston; three brothers, Arthur and Max of Elliston,
and Rex at Gander; a step-brother, Tom of St. John's; and five sisters, Catherine (Mrs.
Fred Thistle) and Hilda (Mrs. Nimshi Crewe), both of St. John's, Nora (Mrs. Robert Clouter)
of Elliston, and Nellie (Mrs. Murray Frazee) of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and Sophie
(Mrs. Joseph Zawada) of Westfield, Mass.

Funeral services will be held in Elliston on Sunday, at St. Mary's (Anglican )Church, with
Rev. Lewis Norman officiating. Internment will be in the Church of England Cemetery,
Elliston.
