From The Downhomer - July 1994, pg 49: THE OLD WORLD CONNECTION by Roger Guttridge Dorset, England .....At Sturminster Newton they visited the historic water mill (see picture) which 200-300 years ago was used in the production of swanskin cloth for Newfoundland. The present mill building is mainly 17th and 18th century but there has been a mill on the site for at least 900 years, as it is mentioned in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book written in 1086. In Sturminster churchyard, the visitors saw the gravestones of members of the two Newfoundland merchant families, Colbourne and Bird.
THE OLD WORLD CONNECTION by Roger Guttridge Dorset, England Inside the church they saw a memorial to clothier William Williams, whose will in 1624 set asside 3,000 pounds to buy land, the rent from which would annually finance the apprenticeship of two boys to the sea service- "two out of Blandford the first year, two out of Shaftsbury the second year, two out of Sturminster Newton the third year." Surviving records suggest that most ,if not all, of the apprentices were sent to Newfoundland shipowners, merchants and traders in the Ports of Poole and Weymuth. A picture of the mill is included also picture of Colbourne family headstone.
