The THOMAS COLES COLLECTION
LOVER of UNION

The following poem was printed in The Fishermen's Advocate July, 1912

signed Lover of Union.

probably written by Camp Cole (AGE 17).

Can we find a friend like Coaker In this Newfoundland if sought Who has brought to loving memory Many things so long forgot He is working in the struggle For the toilers in the deep, Working night and noon and morning When the grabbers are asleep. Yes indeed we do admire him For his boldness in the fight, He has brought us out of darkness Out of darkness into light. When we think of darker ages Ages that have passed away, We can say that things look brighter Brighter, brighter every day. If our friends had lived to see it Friends that laboured with us here They would join the mighty Union And its triumphs they would share. But their days were sooner ended They have gone to take their rest; We are fighting in the conflict We are doing what is best. This is not an easy battle We are fighting friend with friend, But we know that we shall conquer If we fight until the end. Some men say he is a Moses God has sent to do the right, With him we shall be victorious When our foes are put to flight. Yes indeed we read our paper, In the Advocate we see Things that there no doubt delight us, Things that grieve both you and me. Patsy wrote what Satan told him And a little more besides, But I fear that in your presence He would seek a place to hide. All the lies he told about you T'will but make your people strong And when Paddy is defeated This will be our triumph song. How is Wiseman going lately? I guess he's printing rotten stuff. But poor Wiseman we are toilers Do not listen to such bluff. Donald, Patsy, Morris, Wiseman Tried, Coaker, to put you down, But in '13 you'll be leader East and West and all around. Now of course I must not trepass Too much on your valued space, But we hear of very little Far too little from this place. Onward press you mighty Coaker, You have done the thing that's best, Newfoundlanders all will praise you When your body is at rest. LOVER OF UNION ELLISTON JULY 1912.
