1838. Page 370 To His Excellency Captain Prescott, Governor of the Island of Newfoundland, & c. The Petition of the undersigned inhabitants of Bird Island Cove, in Trinity Bay, humbly sheweth. That the settlement of Bird Island Cove contains at the present day 329 inhabitants, who with the exception of 16 individuals, or thereabouts, are Protestants: - that there are 199 children, and 46 young men and women growing up without any regular instruction or education:- that your petitioners are very desirous of seeing this lamentable state of things amended, and their children growing up under the blessing of a scriptural education, which will tend to their present and eternal welfare -- that your petitioners do therefore humbly entreat your Excellency to permit the Board of Education at Trinity to open a School in the settlement of Bird Island Cove, for the furtherance of the very desirable object of the scriptural education of their beloved children-- And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, etc. etc. Bird Island Cove July 28, 1838 Then follow 47 male signatures, all of whom sign with a cross except - William Minty James Porter Robert Crew Mark Chard Cornelius Burt Thomas Minchines William Hobbs William Baker Thomas Steeds Samuel Trass Henry Lemon Among the cross signers are Richard Cole and John Gough, respectively my great - grandfather and my great-great-grandfather. Nebuzaradan Tucker is one of the names. On page 371 there follows this recommendation;- We the undersigned desire heartily to concur in the prayer of this petition, and to recommend the same to the favourable consideration of His Excellency the Governor.
