George Coster, Bonavista, July 14, 1826: ...Mr. Martin's appointment as Reader --? at Bird Island Cove has ceased? to be of -----? by his having left the neighbourhood, after having done the duty assigned him with great regularity for half a year. I presume the Society will not object to paying his salary for the half of L15, & draw on his Treasurer hereafter to that amount. Mr. Martin would gladly undertake the same duty in the place where he now resides, but I believe his service will not be required. I expect to hear shortly on the subject from Mr. Burt, into whose district he has removed. That the Society have not thought fit to hold out any encouragement to the proposed engagement with that young man is no disappointment to me under present circumstances as no opportunity now exists for the formation of such an engagement...
